In Challengers (READ THE SPECIAL), Zendaya is the protagonist of a big screen film for the first time, after playing MJ, Peter Parker’s girlfriend, in the trilogy of Spider-Man with Tom Holland. In the first part of Luca Guadagnino’s film, her character, Tashi, is arguing with her husband Art (Mike Faist), when their young daughter Lily (AJ Lister) interrupts them by asking if they can watch together Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. A reference that did not go unnoticed but in truth completely coincidental, as the director revealed in an interview with ANDW:

Getting the rights to use something in a film is very complicated. Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, helped me. I asked her: “Amy, can we use one of the films from your catalog, so it will be easier to get the rights?”. Lily is a little girl: she won’t choose to look The Social Network or The Post, but maybe a Spider-Man cartoon. So I told her: “Why not A New Universe?” Now I realize that it may seem like a inside jokebut as we know, the unconscious always guides us.
