Star Trek: Paramount has confirmed that an origins film is officially in development

In January it was reported that the director of Andor Toby Haynes was producing a film about the origins of Star Trek for Paramount. The film would have been a prequel set decades before the events of the remake Star Trek of 2009 by JJ Abrams.

According to a report from March, the prequel will serve as an origin story for the franchise’s main timeline. Studio executives are currently focusing on trimming movie budgets Star Trekas they seem to have recognized that the franchise doesn’t have the potential to have billion-dollar returns like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars.

The film about the origins of Star Trek is was officially announced by Paramount during its CinemaCon presentation on Thursday. Toby Haynes will be the director and we also received confirmation that the screenplay was written by Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).

When will production begin on the next Star Trek movie?

Production on the film will begin later this year, with a release date set for 2025. Fans speculate that the prequel film will explore how Starfleet and the United Federation have become the dominant powers of the universe, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Paramount also clarified that Star Trek 4with James Kirk of Chris Pinethe Spock of Zachary Quito and the Uhura of Zoe Saldana, is still in development. Fan reaction to the news of the project has been mixed, as it appears the origins film will arrive sooner than Star Trek 4which is scheduled for release in 2026, coinciding with the franchise’s 60th anniversary.

Another popular theory is that the prequel/origin film could be a retelling of the events of First Contact, which features the Borg, an extraterrestrial race of cyborgs that assimilate entire civilizations.
