A stroke of luck by Woody Allen has finally been released in the United States, some time after its distribution in Europe, and in these hours the famous director has returned to speak to the American media for a promotional campaign that is atypical to say the least.
In recent years, in fact, Woody Allen didn’t have an easy life in the USA after being (re)brought into the picture at the height of the MeToo protests, victim of pound-for-pound cancel culture and extreme feminism protests, sudden contract terminations and a total block on financing for his latest new films. In a new interview with AirMail the author addressed all these topics, from the state of the film industry to cancel culturepassing through his mysterious next film.
“The romanticism of cinema has disappeared“, he has declared. “Frankly, I don’t care if I get released in America or not because, once I finish a film, I just don’t follow it anymore. Even the distribution isn’t what it used to be, for that matter. Now the distribution is for two weeks at the cinema… And then that’s it. I mean, Annie Hall was in theaters in New York for over a year. Everything has changed today, and for the worse, or at least in a way that I no longer like.” As for the futureWoody Allen declared that he was “undecided about it: I don’t want to have to go down the street begging for funds for a new film, I find it a huge hassle. But if someone came to me and said they wanted to support the film, then I would seriously consider it. I probably wouldn’t have the willpower to say no, because I have so many ideas”.
Elsewhere in his interview with AirMail, the author also talked about the possibility of being “cancelled” by the company: “Many people ask me for my opinion on the so-called cancel culture, but my opinion on the matter is always the same: that if you are about to be canceled by a culture, then you should not want to be part of that culture. Because, let’s face it, Who wants to be part of this culture?“.
