King writes about X:

Tomorrow, CARRIE turns 50. It’s hard to believe I’m alive to see it.

At the time, King worked as a teacher and in his free time wrote short stories for men’s magazines. He says that if they hadn’t published his novel he probably would never have become a writer.

I taught, and I came home tired, as if I had been on stage. Then I had to correct the homework. And there was very little time left for my personal work. I remember thinking, “Two or three more years of this and I won’t be able to write at all.” Because they wanted to give me the debate club, and the play, and stuff like that.

Instead, the book was published and King’s career as a writer took off.

From the novel Carrie a film was made starring John Travolta and Sissy Spacek, released in 1976 and directed by Brian DePalmawhich gave birth to a real franchise.
