Automatically created books are climbing the rankings of best-selling books on Amazon.
The ecommerce giant in the world of books today dominates around half of the US book market (and beyond) and since 2007 has allowed anyone to publish a book without the need for a publisher.
Amazon does not disdain the AI Author and only if the books “create disappointment among readers” will it remove the book from sale, but it does not have a policy expressly against content created with AI even in its guidelines published at the end of last year.
During 2024, however, Amazon has decided to prevent a rapidly growing phenomenon like the publishing books summarized by othersand to limit to one maximum of three books published by the same account every day, as well as taking action against potentially dangerous books such as mushroom picking guides.
But the real artificial business on Amazon is often invisible and doesn’t come from famous authors who can (rightly) complain. The many automated book creation tools often rely on so-called long-tail content such as children’s coloring books, sewing pattern texts, or basic guides for using a tool or learning to do an activity.
The tools to create these texts in a few seconds are proliferating like AI Book Generator ($9 to create 10 books of 20 pages each), Books by AI (for a dollar a book) or Ebook Maker (which claims to have created 180 thousand books). At first glance it would seem like a new business for many individuals and especially for Amazon, limited perhaps only by the time and interest of readers.
