Also Steven Spielberg is a fan of Dune – Part 2. It is no coincidence that the director shared his strictly personal opinion regarding the second chapter with the protagonist Timothée Chalamet and directed once again by Denis Villeneuve. After the success of the first film based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert and shown at the cinema in 2021, the second chapter was postponed due to the actors’ strike in 2023, arriving on the screen during 2024. Despite the wait, the film was once again successful, collecting harmonious opinions from audiences and critics , including a commentary by Steven Spielberg.

Dune – Part 2, Steven Spielberg compliments Denis Villeneuve: “One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen”

Throughout his career, Steven Spielberg has made numerous films as a director, so he couldn’t help but congratulate Denis Villeneuve for the work well done on Dune – Part 2. Interviewed together with the director during an episode of podcasts Director’s Cutwanted to compliment the film by calling it “one of the most brilliant sci-fi films I’ve ever seen”. And coming from Steven Spielberg, that’s all. During the interview, he also compared him to other cinema greats such as Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas And James Cameron. Specifically, Spielberg especially appreciated the way she was portrayed Arrakis and Paul Atreides’ quest for revenge against House Harkonnen.

Let me start by saying that there are directors who are world builders. It’s not a long list and we know who many of them are. Starting with [Georges] Méliès and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen I include in that list. Fellini built his worlds. Tim Burton. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. The list goes on, but it’s not that long, and I deeply believe that you are one of the new members.

Specifically, Steven Spielberg addressed how Villeneuve brought Frank Herbert’s novels to life and how he depicted Arrakis, including the giant sandworms.

This is truly a visual epic and is also full of deeply drawn characters. However, the dialogue is very sparse when viewed in proportion to the length of the film. It’s a real cinema. The shots are so painterly, yet there isn’t an angle or a single setup that is pretentious. […] This is a desert-loving story, but for such a desert-loving film there is a great longing for water. For all the sand in this film, it’s actually about water. The sacred waters that long for green meadows and the blue water of life. You film the desert so that it looks like an ocean, a sea. The sand worms were like sea serpents. And that scene where you surf among the sandworms is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. You realized the desert looks like a liquid.
