Bob Iger recently responded to criticism that the Disney would have become “woke“, a term that he says most people don’t even understand anymore.

Talking with The Hollywood Reporter after the victory of his battle for the prosecutor’s office, Bob Iger was asked about the criticisms made by many that Disney has become “woke” in his messages and in his films. Bob Iger said that “the term “wokeis used rather freely, without any pun intended. I think a lot of people don’t even understand what that means“.

However, Bob Iger stressed that the company’s priority must always be to entertain and that it is not “able to” to instill messages as a top priority.

I think the noise has died down a bit. I preached this for a long time within the company, before I left and since I’ve returned, our number one goal is to entertain“Iger said. “The point is that instilling messages as some sort of number one priority in our movies and television shows is not our goal. They have to be fun, and when Disney can have a positive impact on the world, whether it’s promoting acceptance and understanding of people of all kinds, that’s great“.

Bob Iger wants Disney to be “an entertainment company first.”

The Disney CEO then said that the company must be “first and foremost an entertainment company“, while trying to reach a heterogeneous audience.

But overall, we have to be an entertainment-first company… And understand that we’re trying to reach a very, very diverse audience“Iger said. “And to do that, on the one hand, what you do, the stories you tell, really have to reflect the audience you’re trying to reach, but that audience, being so diverse, actually, first and foremost, wants to be entertained, and sometimes not it can be turned off by certain things. And we must be more sensitive to the interests of a broad public. It’s not easy, you know, we can’t please everyone all the time, right?“.
