the garden of the Maiella Park was inaugurated

The green space inaugurated on San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, at the Belvedere San Nicola, is part of the Maiella Widespread Garden Park project.

The new small garden was created on an area of approximately 400 m2, within which a path was created among over 130 botanical entities, most of which are spontaneous. All enriched with botanical labels and informative and educational panels that tell about plants, insects, birds and geology, as well as the historical-cultural aspects linked to the town and the area concerned and told by Silvio Pascetta, Beniamino Gigante and Gianna Di Giambattista.

To enrich the itinerary, the photographs taken by Maria Teresa D’Angelo, Luca Del Monaco, Emanuele De Novellis, Luca Di Fabio, Luciano Di Martino, Paolo Persico, Francesca Tantalo, Donatella Vitale.

Also on display are the images created by the volunteers of the Universal Civil Service: Simona Colasante, Marco Di Clemente, Rosita Falce, Giulia Gagliardi, Rebecca Piccioli, Marco Tersigni. Also on display are Antonio Masciantonio’s comics, Demj Di Biase’s drawings and historical postcards from Stefano Mucciante’s archive.

A challenging job which led, after about two years, to the definition of a network made up of the first 15 small gardens located in the center of towns or within school courtyards.

The green spaces were created with the aim of preserving biodiversity and maintaining the identified areas, but also to raise awareness, appreciate and encourage the spread of native flora and to raise awareness and involve local communities – not just the school world – to environmental issues and the care and protection of common spaces.
Over two hundred students have already been involved in interactive activities in the classroom and outdoors.

The project was born from the experience of the Daniela Brescia botanical gardens of S. Eufemia a Maiella and Michele Tenore of Lama dei Peligni. The intent is to enhance green areas present in some towns of the Park capable of hosting flowerbeds with spontaneous plants that require little maintenance, but also to plant other wild species reproduced in the park’s nursery. The aim is to experiment with a different design, organization and management of urban green spaces, in order to highlight the environmental and historical-cultural peculiarities of the Maiella Park area.

The mayor of S. Valentino Antonio D’Angelo underlines the importance of the recovery of the area finally returned to the local community and hopes for the right attention for the future care of the garden. The verses of the poets Romolo Sulcanese and Giuseppe Tontodonati and the singer-songwriter Nicola Taglieri have been reported on the access steps, also enriched by the murals of the artist Morelia Persico.

The president of the Park Lucio Zazzara is satisfied and highlights the importance of initiatives like this to enhance the Park’s towns, their history, their traditions and environmental peculiarities.

The new Diffuse Garden will soon be completed with the installations at the Belvedere la Stella, where the Park is working to enhance the art of the stonemasons of San Valentino represented by a work by Silvino Di Giambattista.
