Arbizzano (Verona), 10 February 2023 – Firefighters still on site, busy putting out the last fires. It was not completely turned off devastating fire which developed yesterday February 9 in the Coati sausage factory of Arbizzano in the Verona area, causing the seriously injuring an employee which he tried to save himself by throwing himself from a height of 8 meters.
A strong smell of burning invades the air for kilometers this morning, even the Municipality of Negrar di Valpolicella renews the invitation to “keep the windows closed and use the Ffp2 mask for outdoor travel”
Firefighters worked through the night. Traffic restrictions remain with employment of the Local Police of Verona and Negrar and the Carabinieri. Civil Protection volunteers are also on site.
The fire brigade staff worked to contain the flames, continuing operations even during the night. The fire devastated the almost all of the company of approximately 25,000 square meters.
Bottacin: “Arpav’s initial data are reassuring”
On the fire still going on, in the Scaliger land “the first ones Arpav data are reassuring”, says thecouncilor for the Civil Protection of Veneto, Gianpaolo Bottacin. The heat and the simultaneous presence of atmospheric stability meant that i you smoke would rise to great heights while remaining suspended in the atmosphere up to one kilometre.
“This has led to insignificant concentrations of pollutants at ground level. Both the portable instruments available to Arpav and the samplers (canisters) have detected values below the detection threshold with the exception of low concentrations of benzene toluene and styrene”, reports the commissioner.
The cloud of smoke moves
Furthermore, according to what Arpav reports, during the night the plume has moved towards the town of Parona and the city causing a cloud visible in the distance above Verona and a burning smell perceptible even at a great distance from the fire.
Towards morning the cloud moved towards the town of Arbizzano and additional air quality checks were made. Indicative fine particulate measurements reveal an increase in Pm10 concentrations compatible with the event in place.
The fixed monitoring stations of the air quality network did not show significant variations in the hourly values with the exception of a slight increase in the concentration of carbon monoxide in the station in Corso Milano, at 7-12 pm yesterday evening. The Arpav continue i monitors coordinating with its meteorological center ensuring further insights as soon as data is available.
