The use of cash is growing in Pisa and its province. An anomaly that constitutes an alert for the territory and that will certainly lead to more controls. Annual Report of the Financial Information Unit for Italy of the Bank of Italy, Pisa together with other provinces (Asti, Cremona, Grosseto and Pistoia) sees an increase in cash. In 2023, in general, they are relatively more frequent in the provinces of the Center-North and this would lead to a risk of money laundering due to mafia infiltration. In reality, for those in the field, the greatest risk, at least for our province, would be that of tax evasion.

At a national level, we are talking – as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore – of cash movements for 179.5 billion euros. These are operations communicated by obliged entities, such as banks and Post Offices. The increase is 3.5% compared to 2022. The gap for cash between North and South remains, but the fact to underline is that in the last year the anomalies on the greatest increase in the use of cash were precisely in the Center-North.

A figure that must be applied to the territory because each reality is different and in our case, rather than a sign of mafia infiltration, it would be an indication of probable tax evasion.

“Over 24,000 potentially anomalous records were identified, referring to 780 intermediaries (including 416 banks). In 3.6% of cases, those reported found errors and corrected the data transmitted.”
