Turin, 1 July 2024 – The third stage of the Tour de France, the longest of this edition, saw the victory of Biniam Girmay, Eritrean cyclist of the Intermarché-Wanty team. The stage, which took place between Piacenza and Turin for a total of 230.8 kilometers, ended with a spectacular sprint.
Alessandria’s Passion for Cycling
The passage of the Tour de France in Alessandria confirmed the city’s passion for cycling. Thousands of people gathered along the route to cheer on the cyclists and show their enthusiasm for the Grande Boucle. It was a moment of great celebration and popular participation, which made this third stage even more special.
An Exciting Finale
The stage was characterized by an emotional finale. Just two kilometers from the finish, a fall altered the balance in the compact group. Fortunately, there were no serious consequences for the cyclists involved. Biniam Girmay was able to take advantage of the situation, imposing himself in the sprint and taking a historic victory.
Yellow Jersey Change
The yellow jersey of the race leader has passed from the shoulders of the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar to those of the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost). Despite this change of leadership, the main contenders for the final victory remain close in the general classification, with the same time: Pogacar, the Danish Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step).
Next stop: Pinerolo-Valloire
Tomorrow is the fourth stage of the Tour, which will see the cyclists start from Pinerolo and finish in Valloire, covering a distance of 139.6 kilometers. This stage will mark Italy’s farewell to the Tour de France and the beginning of the first real climbs, bringing the competition to French territory.
