After a long wait, around 5:45 p.m., the demolition and safety operations for the unsafe portion of the villa at via de’ Fogliani 24, which had suffered a major collapse this morning, began. It is a villa from the early twentieth century, not inhabited for some time: a building of certain charm, located at the intersection with via Barbieri.

In fact, subsidence was ascertained on the eastern side of the building and the detachment of the turret, dangerously inclined towards the road and a nearby condominium. Renovation work had been underway in the house for about a week, which should have consolidated the foundations. However, in mid-morning, the collapse of the turret alarmed the company carrying out the work. Apparently, part of the land on which the building stands gave way, a part of the construction detached, remaining dangerously balanced and slowly giving rise to subsequent small collapses. In the early afternoon, an entire portion of the wall also detached.

The area was guarded by the Fire Department and the Local Police. Via de’ Fogliani was closed to traffic, including pedestrians, until safety conditions were restored, between Viale Muratori and Via Sigonio.

As a precaution, part of the two buildings adjacent to the property on Via de’ Fogliani were evacuated. Specifically, the residents of three buildings were evacuated around 11:30 am, at least those whose apartments are on the lower floors. There was in fact a concrete risk that a collapse could invade the roadway and also damage the surrounding homes.

The wait for the demolition – which seemed to be the only viable option – was long, but around 5:30 pm the municipal ordinance arrived, also examined by the Magistrate on duty to exclude criminal profiles.

The crane of a company called for the occasion then began to dismantle the turret, which piece by piece was reduced to rubble, which collapsed inside the courtyard area without causing damage to the outside. Once the demolition is completed, the safety conditions will have to be assessed and traffic may still be affected by the closure of the roads. Soon, however, the evacuated residents will be able to return to their homes.
