The closure of the mechanical biological treatment plant (tmb) of the unsorted waste collection of the Sicula Trasporti landfill in Lentini starting tomorrow marks the beginning of a new waste emergency for 200 Sicilian municipalities. Catania, therefore, will also have to deal with the consequences of the failure to collect unsorted waste.
The administrators of the plant, under judicial administration since 2020, informed the Ansa news agency that, despite the restart of the tmb on 26 June following a provision from the president of the Sicilian Region, only two of the four landfill management companies cited in the order have accepted the assignment and started the approval procedures: Srr Ato 4 plants of Caltanissetta and Catanzaro Costruzioni.
This situation has led to the saturation of the spaces available for the storage of the filmed bales of waste Eer 191212. The judicial administrators also make it known that the company will not be able to continue with the waste treatment and reception activities beyond 2 July 2024 , reserving the right to limit deliveries as early as July 1st if safety conditions so require.
An urgent inspection has been requested by the territorial control bodies, including Arpa Sicilia, Arpa Uos Attività produttive Catania, the provincial command of the fire brigade and the Asp of Catania, to verify what was declared.
