REGGIO CALABRIA – The Technical Table organized by Co.Re.Com. Calabria aimed at creating the first Digital Control Tower (TDC) has been established at Palazzo Campanella.

The Digital Control Towers (TDC) represent an ambitious and innovative project, inspired by the historic Saracen towers: as the ancient towers watched over the sea, defending the coasts from pirate attacks, the Digital Towers will monitor cyberspace against network “pirates”, safeguarding digital identity and protecting citizens from online threats.
Representatives of local authorities and professional associations participated in the meeting: engineer Filippo Moscato representing the Municipality of Reggio Calabria; the mayor of the Municipality of Botricello Saverio Simone Puccio and the deputy mayor Giovanna Puccio; the deputy mayor of the Municipality of Cassano Jonio Antonino Mungo; the president of the Municipal Council of Villapiana Joseph Guida, together with the councilor for education Lorenza Pastore and the municipal technician Massimo Damiano Scuderi, and engineer Elmiro Tavolaro representing the Order of Engineers of Cosenza.

The Technical Roundtable discussed new digital technologies (Internet 3.0, metaverse, artificial intelligence and social networks) in the context of the objectives of digital literacy and combating educational poverty defined in the Co.Re.Com programming. 2024 approved by the Regional Council of Calabria and by the Communications Authority (AGCOM).

During the meeting, several critical issues related to the use of new digital technologies emerged: the risk of flattening of critical thinking among young people, the digital exclusion of vulnerable users and less well-off communities, and the possibility of technological dependence, especially among minors. The importance of a conscious and correct use of technologies to mitigate these risks and promote inclusion and critical education was underlined.
On the other hand, the potential identified by the Technical Roundtable concerns the possibility of improving the quality of digital public services, making them more efficient and accessible; use artificial intelligence to benefit disadvantaged categories to reduce inequalities; enhance local historical and cultural resources by creating new opportunities for tourism and heritage conservation; improve educational programs, promoting more inclusive learning suited to the needs of the contemporary digital world
Corecom Calabria expresses satisfaction for the broad participation and contributions received, marking an important step forward in the realization of the project.

The Technical Table unanimously shared the possibility of extending participation to other local authorities, administrations, Universities of Calabria and professional orders of architects and engineers, to ensure extensive participation that covers all the professional contributions requested in the expression of interest.
