“Having almost reached the halfway point of half a yearthe projection for the end of 2024 of the victims at work seems to be already tragic and similar to that of previous years. From January to May there are 369 victims, 11 more compared to the end of May 2023. Compared to the same period last year they grow Unfortunately, work-related deaths +5,5%. And this is the given more significant and disheartening, because that’s what a worsening of the conditions of safety in the workplace”.
Mauro RossatoPresident of the Vega Engineering Observatory for Workplace Safety and the Environment in Mestre, expresses his concern following the reading of thelatest investigation carried out by its team of experts on the increase in workplace deaths. “But as always – he claims – And Incidence is the real risk indicator for the workers of our country, since we are talking about victims compared to the working population. A fact that concretely indicates the areas at greatest risk and which is proposed as a valuable mapping for everyone those who work for safety at work”.
THE RISK OF DEATH REGION BY REGION
To finish in red zone at the end of May with an incidence greater than +25% compared to the national average (Im=Average incidence index, equal to 12.1 deaths at work per million workers) I am: Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Sicily and Puglia. In Orange zone: Calabria. In yellow zone: Abruzzo, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Basilicata, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Molise. In the white area: Lazio, Sardinia, Marche and Veneto.
THE ACCIDENT PHENOMENON BY AGE GROUP
Even in the first five months of the year the Mestre Observatory elaborates the identikit of the workers more at risk for age range. And it always does so through the mortality rates (per million employed).
This last fact continues to be worrying among older workers. In fact, the highest incidence is recorded precisely among workers over sixty-five (with an incidence of 55.0), followed by the band between 55 and 64 years old (with an incidence of 19.4).
FOREIGN WORKERS SUBJECT TO A MORE THAN DOUBLE RISK OF FATAL INJURY
The deceased foreigners I am 62 out of a total of 286with a risk of death at work that is more than double compared to Italians. And in fact they register 26.1 deaths per million employedagainst the 10.6 of Italians who lose their lives while working.
THE ABSOLUTE NUMBERS OF DEATHS AT WORK AND INJURIES
I am 369 victims at work in Italyof which 286 at work (15 more than in May 2023) and 83 in itinere (4 less than in May 2023). Lombardy still has the highest number of victims at work (48). They are followed by: Emilia-Romagna (35), Campania (30), Sicily (22), Lazio (21), Puglia (20), Piedmont (19), Tuscany (17), Veneto (14), Trentino-Alto Adige (12), Calabria (8)Umbria and Liguria (7), Abruzzo (6), Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sardinia and Marche (5), Valle d’Aosta and Basilicata (2) and Molise (1)
THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR IS THE MOST AFFECTED
It’s still the Construction sector to highlight the highest number of deaths at work: I am 57. Followed by Manufacturing Activities (37), Transport and Warehousing (25) and Trade (18). The age group numerically most affected by fatal accidents at work is that between 55 and 64 years old (99 out of 286 total).
The data who lost their lives are 21while 8 lost their lives en route, that is, on the way from home to work. Foreigners 62while 17 died due to an accident while traveling.
Il Tuesday turns out to be the most mournful day of the week, i.e. the one in which the most fatal accidents occurred in the first five months of the year (23.1%).
ACCIDENT REPORTS
Total injury reports grow by 2.1% compared to May 2023. In fact, they were 245,857 at the end of May 2023, in 2024 they went to 251,132.
TOTAL NUMBERS OF ACCIDENT REPORTS BY SECTOR
The highest number of complaints totals comes from Manufacturing Activities (29,256); followed by: Construction (14,469), Healthcare (14,370), Transport and Warehousing (13,266) and Commerce (12,911).
TOTAL COMPLAINTS BY GENDER, NATIONALITY AND AGE
There have been reports of injuries from female workers 91.441those of their male colleagues 159.691. Those on the occasion of work (therefore excluding commuting accidents) were 212.803: 72,241 are women and 140,562 are men.
Reports of accidents at work among Italians are 171.584while foreigners are 41.219The age group most affected at work and in itinere is the one that goes from 45 to 54 years old with 53,420 complaints (21.3% of the total).
