A disturbance, arriving from central Europe, will bring, from the early hours of today, Tuesday 2 July, a new worsening of weather conditions in most regions peninsular, with precipitation, mostly thunderstorms, in particular in the internal and Adriatic areas of central and southern Italy. Furthermore, a strengthening of the ventilation from the north-western quadrants is expected, with greater effects on Sardinia, Sicily and the extreme southern regions, associated with a general drop in temperatures.

Based on available forecasts, the Civil Protection Department, in agreement with the regions involved, which are responsible for activating civil protection systems in the affected territories, has issued a new warning of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities that are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin available on the department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).

The warning is from the early hours of today strong to stormy north-westerly winds on Sicily, extending to Calabriain particular the areas of the Strait of Sicily and the Ionian sectors, with storm surges along exposed coasts. Furthermore, always awaited from the early hours, scattered rainfall, mainly in the form of showers or thunderstorms, over Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia, extending to Campania and Basilicata. The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind. Based on the forecasted and ongoing phenomena, a forecast for tomorrow has been assessed yellow alert in the Veneto, in part of Tuscany and Umbria, in the entire territory of Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basificata and in part of Calabria.

The weather and criticality framework expected for Italy is updated daily based on new forecasts and the evolution of phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of conduct to be followed in case of bad weather. The information on regional alert levels, on specific criticalities that could affect individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will follow the evolution of the situation.

Aosta Valley, situation improving in Cervinia and Cogne

Meanwhile, the situation in Cervinia and Cogne is improving. Yesterday evening, the Aid Coordination Center met at the headquarters of the Aosta Valley Civil Protection to examine the update on the situation created after the heavy rains of last Saturday. The meeting revealed that In Breuil-Cervinia the works to clear the Marmore torrent continuedwhich overflowed on Saturday, as well as the activities of emptying the cellars from debris and water. The situation at Cogne it’s improving. In fact, work has begun on restoring the road connection along the regional road and evaluations of the technical solutions, times and costs are underway.

Yesterday, 853 people were airlifted to the valley and another 300 are booked for today. Four helicopters from the regional Civil Protection operated with technicians from the Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue team on board, one from the Guardia di Finanza, one from the Fire Brigade and two from the Carabinieri.

Finally, the water supply problem is also being solved: work has been done on the aqueduct and the loading of the tanks is underway. At the moment, the obligation to boil water remains in force.
