Cesena, Cinema Squares 2024 kicks off from 5 to 18 July

(Sixth Power) – Cesena – 1 July 2024 – After Riccardo Scamarcio, Alba Rohrwacher and Stefano Accorsi, Elio Germano will be the protagonist actor of the eleventh edition of Cinema Squaresthe event that brings the protagonists of Italian cinema to the historic center of Cesena.

The heart of the Cesena summer of cinema will be the renovated Piazza Almerici – in front of the Biblioteca Malatestiana and the Palazzo del Ridotto – which will host evenings dedicated to screenings, meetings and live soundtracks from 5 to 18 July, with further screenings proposed at the San Biagio arena of Palazzo Guidi and aperitifs with the author at the Re di pane and the Chiostro di San Francesco. The Malatestiana will also be the scene of screenings and exhibitions, including one dedicated to Elio Germano.

The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Cesena with the artistic direction of the Eliseo cinema.

Homage to Elio Germano

Guest of honor of this edition of Cinema Squares it is therefore Elio Germano, one of the most versatile and appreciated actors in Italian cinema, who will be in Cesena on Wednesday 17 July for the screening of two films in which he was the protagonist, The fabulous young man (2014), by Mario Martone – which will be presented by the actor – and the new Confidence, by Daniele Luchetti, at the end of which Germano will meet the public. They will also be proposed Laf building (2023), by David Riondino (July 11), and The incredible story of The Island of Roses (2020), by Sidney Sibilia (July 18).

Special events

Cinema Squares will offer a long series of special events, with live soundtracks, meetings, screenings of restored classics, anime and cartoons in the renovated Piazza Almerici and in Arena San Biagio. It starts on Friday 5 July with the screenings of two films by Buster Keaton, Sherlock Jr. e A weekwith live soundtrack by the Maderna-Lettimi Conservatory Orchestra, with arrangements by Giorgio Babbini. On Saturday 6th July the cult film by Jim Jarmusch Only lovers survivepresented by Gabriella Gilibertiwhile on Monday 8 July here is the award-winning animated film My robot friendOf Pablo Bergerpresented by Michele Galardini. Tuesday 9th we will see the masterpiece of Orson Welles Fourth Estate in the restored 4K version, presented by Leo Canali and Edoardo Saccone by Casaba Podcast. So Wednesday 10th here Romantica candid generational fresco that showcases the comic and chameleonic talent of Pilar Fogliati, present to present the film. The same evening, but at the San Biagio Arena, we will find the actress and director in a meeting with the public at the end of Romeo and Julietby Giovanni Veronesi, in which he co-stars with Sergio Castellitto and Geppi Cucciari. The event is in collaboration with Fice ER for the review It Happened Tomorrow. Monty Banks is a selection from the most significant first and second works of the season, accompanied by the author and/or performers. Scheduled The Paradise (July 5), by Enrico Maria Artalewho will present the film; Me and the dry (July 6), of Gianluca Santoniwho will present the film together with the protagonist Francis Lombard; Gloria! (July 8), of Margaret Vicariopresented by the protagonist Carlotta Gamba; Too blue (July 9), of Filippo Barbagallowho will present the film; finally Zamora (July 12), of Neri Marcorèwho will present the film.

Aperitif with the author

That is, book presentations, chats about cinema and beers in the company of two interpreters of our cinema and young critics. In collaboration with Re di pane, I Libri di Elena bookshop and Emilia Romagna Festival. The first aperitif with the author will be on Saturday 6 July at Re di pane, where Gabriella Giliberti presents his Love song for a vampire – Etologia del vampiro da F.W. Murnau a Taika Waititi (Ed. A contemporary and ethereal figure in Italian cinema, Carlotta Gamba fascinates with her versatility and expressive immediacy. A meeting to retrace her career: from her debut with the D’Innocenzo brothers, to her meeting with Margherita Vicario. The theme of the meeting on Saturday 13th, again at the Re di pane, is also very current: Talking about films: film criticism in the time of podcasts will see protagonists Cristina Resa and Andrea Basti of Incompetenti podcast, stimulated by Giulia Quintabà’s questions. The last aperitif with the author will be on Monday 15th July (Re di pane), when the curators Cecilia Ermini and Simone Emiliani will present Ghosts of Desire: Cinema and the Films of Luca Guadagnino (Marsilio), in dialogue with Michele Galardini. This is the first monograph dedicated to the most unusual, ambitious, cosmopolitan of contemporary Italian directors.

In Malatestiana

The magnificent spaces of the Malatestiana Library will be an integral part of the festival, hosting various events. On Friday 5 and 12 July (4:30 p.m.) and Saturday 6 and 13 July (10:30 a.m.) in the screening room we will see the festival Monty Banks Cultfour first and second works by great authors of contemporary Italian cinema (booking a seat in the theater will give you a discount on breakfast at the Caffè della Malatestiana on 6 and 13 July).

The photographic exhibition will be visible from 5 July to 15 September Homage to Elio Germano. A recognition to the special guest of the eleventh edition of Cinema Squaresrendered through a photo gallery that documents his cinematic journey, from Breath by Emanuele Crialese up to the most recent works of Bad Tales e America Latina of Damiano and Fabio d’Innocenzo. The exhibition also highlights great successes such as My brother is an only child by Daniele Luchetti, The fabulous young man by Mario Martone e I wanted to hide by Giorgio Diritti (2020), which awarded the Roman actor the David di Donatello and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

And from 10 July to 15 September the photographic exhibition returns CliCiak – Cinema Shots, a national competition for stage photographers now in its twenty-seventh edition and which confirms itself as an important event for professionals and enthusiasts. The only initiative of its kind in Italy, this year too it has collected a rich documentation on the films and TV series of the season, which increases the photo library on contemporary Italian cinema. A selection of the photos forms the exhibition, which will then travel to various Italian cities. The photos on display all come from the “CliCiak” archive of the Centro Cinema Città di Cesena.
