Modica – The Agents of the Modica Police Station arrested a foreigner resident in Modica for the attempted theft of a moped which occurred in the Sorda district and for resisting a public official. A citizen was making an ATM withdrawal at his bank branch and was leaving his vehicle parked near him when, suddenly, a young 22-year-old got into the vehicle and tried to start it to escape. The man’s screams towards the thief destabilized him and he in fact clumsily fell to the ground after a few dozen meters, abandoning the moped that he had just stolen. A few moments later the police station patrol intervened, on duty to control the area, alerted by the man who was recovering the vehicle abandoned by the thief.
The police officers, having acquired the very first information about the perpetrator, having an idea of who he could be, specifically a person known to the officers for thefts against property and already arrested in the past, immediately began looking for him. Thanks to the precious description provided by the victim, the police officers were able to track down the offender in a few minutes, who, at the sight of them, fled hastily, even risking being hit by passing cars.
The officers managed to stop him promptly and safely, despite the young man’s strenuous intention to escape capture – who continued to struggle – they managed to handcuff him and take him to the police station. The images of the attempted theft, taken by the cameras of the bank’s video surveillance circuit, highlighted the entire event and for these reasons the 22-year-old was arrested in flagrante delicto for attempted theft and for resisting a public official as well as placed under house arrest available to the Judicial Authority. The young thief was also found in possession of a smartphone which, following careful research, appeared to have been stolen that same morning, then returned to its rightful owner, which is why he was also released on bail for receiving stolen goods. The arrest was validated in the context of the direct trial and at the outcome of the hearing the precautionary measure of the obligation to stay and report to the judicial police was imposed on the foreigner.
