On the occasion of the third stage of the 111th edition of the Tour de France, taking place on Monday 1 July 2024, Alexandria offers visitors an extraordinary opportunity to explore the city’s artistic and cultural heritage. The Costruire Insieme Company, which manages several local museums, has decided to extend the opening hours of the museums from 10:00 to 19:00 to allow tourists and residents to fully enjoy the exhibitions.

Art Rooms in Via Machiavelli 13

The Art Rooms host the exhibition “Things Never Seen” by the famous Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin. Curated by Giovanna Calvenzi and Susanna Berengo Gardin, the exhibition presents a selection of sixty previously unpublished photographs, which highlight the artist’s extraordinary ability to capture unique moments of everyday life. The exhibition concludes with a special section dedicated to the photographs taken by Berengo Gardin in 1994, during the historical re-enactment of the Battle of Marengo.

Civic Museum of Palazzo Cuttica

The Civic Museum of Palazzo Cuttica, located in Via Parma 1, offers a journey through the art and history of the Alessandria area. Among the pieces on display, two Flemish-made tapestries from the 17th century and important works of sacred Piedmontese painting from the 16th and 17th centuries stand out, such as the polyptych of the Coronation of the Virgin by Gandolfino da Roreto. The archaeological collection of Cesare Di Negro Carpani and a collection of illuminated chorales commissioned by Pope Pius V complete the experience.

Of particular interest is the glazed terracotta “St. George” by Lucio Fontana, a work that reflects the artist’s period of collaboration with the Studio Mazzotti of Albisola and with the Manufactures de Sèvres of Paris. Also exhibited is a creation by Mario Fallini, entitled “Lucio Fontana”which pays homage to the artist’s famous “Buchi” and “Tagli”.

Marengo Museum

The historic Villa Delavo in Spinetta Marengo, home to the Marengo Museum, welcomes visitors with a rich collection of military memorabilia and uniforms that tell the story of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Italian campaign and the Battle of Marengo in 1800. In addition to the historical artefacts, the museum hosts original works by cartoonist Guido Crepax, including materials from the exhibition “Crepax+Napoleone”. Of particular note is the wargaming “The Battle of Marengo”with a hand-painted playing field and around 200 cardboard soldiers.
