“More efficient and safe department”

Imola, 267 June 2024 – Cut of the tape yesterday morning for the new headquarters of the Ophthalmology department, who left the community house of Castel San Pietro to arrive permanently at the Santa Maria della Scaletta hospital.

A long-planned move, which in the words of the ASL will allow the operational unit led by the acting director, Rocco De Fazio, to “increase its outpatient and surgical production thanks to a greater provision of space and dedicated staff”.

At the same time, precious spaces will be freed up in Castel San Pietro, where the renovation work on the fourth floor will soon begin to create an additional space with 15 beds in addition to the current 21 (in addition to the 12 in the hospice). Also in Castel San Pietro, where eye examinations will continue to be carried out by the local clinic (CUP reservation), a new emergency exit ramp will also be built on the mezzanine floor and the new fire-fighting lift will be installed.

Coming back instead to Santa Maria della Scalettain recent days the ophthalmology clinics have started operations on the ground floor of the hospital in a dedicated area which features two reception stations, a secretarial office, four clinics, an emergency clinic and two reception rooms equipped with five beds each for pre-surgical preparation and post-surgical observation. The activity of eye surgery it will mostly take place in a dedicated day surgery room, with an adjoining room for recovering patients, within the operating block, recently built with an investment of over 100 thousand euros. Small outpatient operations will instead be carried out at the surgical clinic of the C polyclinics.

“This new location has reasons that concern the safety of care, but also the general efficiency of the system”, underlines the general director of the ASL, Andrea Rossi. “It is an important connection for the whole district”, adds mayor Marco Panieri.

To allow the transfer of the department from Castel San Pietro to Imola, in recent weeks the scheduled activities of the Ophthalmology operational unit have been suspended, without prejudice to all emergencies, both outpatient and surgical, and post-operative checks for operations carried out before the suspension. A stop that caused inconvenience and discontent among patients.

“The instruments they were dismantled, reassembled and tested again: an important process which involved the suspension of activity for fifteen days – reconstructs De Fazio –. Now we are busy trying to recover what was most urgent, starting, little by little, to resume ordinary activity. We will return to full normality within a week/ten days.”
