American tourist saved from heart cancer Perugia hospital

American tourist saved – On June 26, 2024, a 75-year-old American tourist, Mister Alan, was saved from imminent danger at Perugia Hospital. Traveling to Umbria with his wife to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Mister Alan was emergency hospitalized following a stroke.

During diagnostic tests, a sizable tumor mass, approximately seven centimeters in diameter, was discovered in the left atrium of his heart. Faced with this discovery, the hospital’s cardiac surgery team, led by Dr Marcello Bergonzini, he immediately recommended emergency surgery to remove the tumor.

Dr. Bergonzini stressed that the risk of complications was very high, as was the probability of developing acute pulmonary edema. These factors made returning to the United States extremely dangerous for Mister Alan’s survival. Therefore, emergency cardiac surgery was proposed.

During the operation, Dr. Bergonzini’s team found that the tumor mass originated from a particular anatomical site. This required partial mobilization of the heart (cardiotomy) to allow complete removal of the tumor. In the same operating session, the team performed an aorto-coronary bypass, a mitral valvuloplasty and the amputation of a part of the left atrium of the heart.

Currently, Mister Alan is in good clinical condition and in the next few days he will be ready to undertake the return flight to the United States.

Mr. Alan and his wife expressed their gratitude to the hospital’s medical director, Dr. Arturo Pasqualucci, for the excellent specialist care they received and the timely nursing assistance. They also highlighted the efficiency and free nature of the Italian public health system, expressing their deep gratitude.
