People serving people. And again: “The future lies in tradition”. They are the slogan that the Financial Police chose to celebrate one of its most prestigious birthdays, that of 250th anniversary of the foundation.
And indeed it was a popular celebration that Udine has reserved for the Fiamme Gialleas witnessed by the crowded audience under the vaults of the Loggia del Lionello and the curiosity of the many passers-by who stopped to listen to the speech of the provincial commander Enrico Spanò and the music of the wind quartet.
“This is an important day,” he observed on the sidelines of the event Mauro Bordin, president of the regional councilwho participated in the ceremony and was called to reward some of the financiers deserving of the official commendation.
«Today we celebrate – added the highest representative of the Legislative Assembly – the 250 years of one of the most significant military institutions in our country, born as a border customs police and over time becoming a body that guarantees security in increasingly strategic players in the economy and finance, as Commander Spanò recalled in his speech”.
One «important part of the history of the Guardia di Finanza – Bordin remarked – it directly concerns our region and in particular Friuli, with the first rifle shots of the Great War fired in Brazzano and numerous episodes of heroism that are still remembered and passed down in the staff training courses and that therefore remain the heritage of the financiers throughout their career. This military institution has always been close to the citizens and the Regional Council, as a civil institution, cannot but thank it, guaranteeing its constant collaboration to those who work day after day for our security”.
The numbers listed by Spanò – in the official report that followed the reading of the messages of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella he was born in general commander of the GdF, Andrea De Gennaro – are the best witnesses of the vastness and complexity of the work of the financiers of the province of Udine.
In fact, let’s talk about 5193 interventions between checks and controlsof the discovery of 114 total tax evadersof the seizure of assets of illicit origin for 126 millionas well as of 135 tons of diesel and 11 tons of contraband tobacco removed from the marketOf almost 200 kilos of drugs and 630 thousand counterfeit productsbut also of 24 thousand people identified at the border after the resumption of controls in October 2023.
The military awards ceremony concluded a morning in which the regional councilor Stefano Balloch, the mayor of Udine Alberto Felice De Toni with his deputy Alessandro Venanzi and numerous other first citizens of the province also participated. Also present were the prefect of Udine, Domenico Lione, the police commissioner Alfredo D’Agostino and the archbishop Riccardo Lamba.
Also in the front row is the former partisan relay team Paola Del Din, gold medal for military valour.
