Viterbo, supermarkets are multiplying and mobility is increasingly unsustainable

With one hand we work on the Urban Plan for Sustainable Mobility, with the other we do everything we can to make that same mobility unsustainable, in one of the cities with the highest rate of cars in Italy. and with the highest walking difficulties (for cultural and psychological reasons, certainly not physical ones).

The schizophrenia of the Viterbo public administration clearly emerges from the number of authorizations granted for the opening of new supermarkets. The last one, in the usual northern quadrant, is an Ipertriscount belonging to the Gros group, a consortium of Roman supermarkets. It opened last Wednesday at km 86,400 of Cassia Nord, in the Poggino area, and was immediately besieged by thousands of consumers looking for a discount. Three thousand square meters, of which approximately two thousand for sales and one thousand for laboratories, services and warehouses, seventy employees employed, all from Viterbo and the district.

Given that supermarkets do their job, produce wealth and create jobs, one wonders how yet another mega store can be reconciled with – we read on the Municipality’s website – “strategic planning” (because at Palazzo dei Priori they are not only planners but also strategists) and with “the goal of improving the quality of life and the sustainability of travel in the short, medium and long term”.
