Bologna, against the double row stops the New Jersey team arrive in Viale Pietramellara

Wild parking limited in via Carracci, in front of the entrance to the high speed train, the Municipality of Bologna it replicates the same deterrent recipe of double-row parking also in Viale Pietramellara. In front of the central station, dealing with the same problems of cars in double rows, despite the repeated interventions on mobility in recent years, from cameras to lanes reserved for buses and taxis, starting from tomorrow, Wednesday 26 June, experimentation with New Jersey will begin in the stretch between Piazza Medaglie d’Oro and Via Amendola, where cars are concentrated in double rows waiting for or unloading someone heading to the station.

The barriers

The recipe is the same one adopted in recent years in via Carracci. The trial will last at least two weeks, specifies the Municipality, “to give citizens time to get used to the change in circulation and parking”. The objective, explains Palazzo D’Accursio, is «to avoid the congestion phenomena present today and to streamline the route of public transport vehicles, also in anticipation of the increase in the flow of public transport on Viale Pietramellara, linked to the upcoming construction sites of the tram in the historic center”. The solution chosen by the Municipality consists in the temporary insertion of barriers made with New Jersey plastic to channel traffic into two distinct lanes, with the simultaneous ban on parking on the north side of the avenue, that is, the side of the station. The fast rotation parking spaces and those for loading and unloading serving commercial activities will be moved further along the avenue, before the intersection with via Bovi Campeggi.

The quick stop

If the experiment “proves effective – explains the Municipality in a note – the solution will be made permanent and the road will be arranged in a similar way to what was done on Via Carracci, through the insertion of fixed New Jersey concrete barriers and the consequent adaptation of signs”. However, Palazzo D’Accursio reminds us that the underground car park “Kiss&ride” remains “always accessible” for quick parking, with entrance from via Svampa, which however often continues not to be used by travelers who arrive or depart with trains headed to the platforms of Piazzale Est or from 1 to 10, which are much closer to reach from the entrance in Piazza Medaglie d’Oro. In via Carracci the arrival of the New Jersey brought with it a series of controversies, especially from traders, we will see if there will be the same complaints on Viale Pietramellara, where traffic is objectively slowed down during rush hours by double-parking.

The criticisms of the League

Meanwhile comes the rejection from the League. The New Jerseyans – claims the Northern League group leader in the Municipality Matteo Di Benedetto – are alone «an attempt at a cure for the symptoms, but not for the cause. Which is a kiss&ride that doesn’t work well.” And it suggests more effective signage. The other Northern League councilor, Giulio Venturi, is also against the measure: “It seems that Bologna – he comments – is the only city whose access to the above-ground railway station is not permitted”.
