Copenhagen, greentech metro: technology made in Naples

greentech metro by Copenhagen but made in Naples. The new route of the M4 Metro linein the presence of King Fredrik of Denmark, accompanied by the mayors of the capital of the Northern European country and of Frederiksberg. The line uses the digital signaling system of Hitachi Raila global company that has one of the centers of excellence in Italy in terms of railway signaling systems with offices in Naples and Genoa.

The extension a South of the M4 is 4.5 kilometers long and serves five underground stations and a hub for interconnections with the S-Bahn network. The new metro line connects M3 Cityringen and M4 Nordhavn to the interconnection center of København Syd, which is expected to become one of the largest in Denmark in the future. For these extensions, Hitachi Rail designed and supplied the transport system, including signaling and train supervision technologies, as well as new train fleets.

The system designed by Hitachi Rail combines train control technology based on a driverless system and on the “communication based train control” system, an automatic railway traffic control system that ensures the highest standards of quality and safety. The technology reduces the need for physical infrastructure on board trains and increases service capacity, allowing trains to travel safely at shorter intervals. With the new extension of the M4 line, around 75% of citizens in the areas of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg they will have immediate access to a subway or train station within 600 meters of each other.

M4 is the fourth metro project successfully completed by Hitachi Rail Copenhagenstarting with M1 and M2 opened for commercial service in 2002, followed by M3 (Cityringen) which opened in September 2019.

Since then, Hitachi Rail has supported Metroselskabet and the municipality’s goal of connecting Copenhagen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The trains have an innovative design and the signaling technologies are among the most advanced, all to achieve greener and more sustainable mobility. «We thank Metroselskabet and the transport authorities for their trust and strong cooperation in recent years. We are proud to share this success, an important step towards the city of Copenhagen’s ambitious plan to become the first zero-impact capital”, commented Gianluca Guido, head of Hitachi Rail Denmark.

Hitachi Rail has been present in Denmark for over thirty years through its key partnership with the Copenhagen Metro.

Recall that last May 31, 2024, Hitachi Rail completed the acquisition of the business Ground Transportation Systems by Thales in a €1.66 billion deal, which saw it expand its presence in Denmark also through its strong collaboration with Banedanmark for the launch of the European Rail Traffic Management System digital signaling technology, the European rail traffic management system , on the country’s main network.
