In the capital the centre-right wins, in the large coastal center the “wide field” wins

The ballot in Sicily ends with the stakes split in half. If the centre-right wins the challenge in the provincial capital of Caltanissetta (58 thousand inhabitants), where Walter Calogero Tesauro was elected, in Gela (75 thousand inhabitants), which is just 25 km away, it is the Pd-led broad field that celebrates M5s.Tesauro wins the match with 52.36% of the preferences, while the rival Annalisa Maria Petitto, a civic supported by the Democratic Party without a symbol, stops at 47.64%. Five points of difference which probably weighs on the choice of the M5s, which in the first round had supported the outgoing mayor Roberto Gambino who came third, not to make any comparison with the candidate supported by the Democratic Party. At a local level, the leaders of the M5s split, with a part of the movement, in open controversy with the dems, which supported Tesauro.

«I am feeling a great emotion – comments the new mayor of Caltanissetta – a beautiful moment because I managed to put a smile on the face of the coalition that supported me. I take this opportunity to wish good luck to Annalisa Petitto who fought and in any case the city hall will not only be mine but everyone’s, without colors or parties”

Half an hour’s drive from the capital, the decision to run together instead rewards the Pd-M5s axis with candidate Giuseppe Terenziano Di Stefano who in Gela doubles, by preferences, the centre-right rival Grazia Rita Cosentino. «Today a sign of hope goes from Gela not only for this city but also for the whole of Sicily, here we have heavily defeated the right», comments Nuccio Di Paola, M5s coordinator in Sicily. While for the Sicilian secretary of the Democratic Party, Anthony Barbagallo, “it is the demonstration that when the center-left chooses quality candidates and there is a clear project it is rewarded by the voters”. Marco Falcone, councilor in the Schifani government, and elected in Brussels, also celebrates to the recent European elections on Forza Italia’s Island list: «Di Stefano, although coming from the left, has maintained a civic profile and for this reason he was chosen by the people, aggregating transversal sensitivity and appreciation».
