Actuality

From July 1st to August 31st Trapani will have a beach to facilitate disabled people entering the water. Two months during which the Municipality of Trapani, together with the Provincial Health Authority and the local section of the Red Cross, will meet the needs of disabled people.

In fact, from July 1st, the “Free and accessible” initiative will start on the free beach located below Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, with the aim of creating a reception and accessibility service for the beaches in the municipal area in order to allow citizens suffering from disabilities the possibility of accessing the beaches of the Trapani coast in safety.

“The municipal administration has recently intercepted important funding – explains Giuseppe Virzì, municipal councilor for social services in the proposed resolution then endorsed by the council -, through which to increase the development of the coasts in the coming years but, despite the progress made, Unfortunately, access to part of the Trapani coast presents difficulties for swimmers with special needs or temporary or permanent difficulties, due to the existence of architectural barriers. In past years the Administration, together with various local associations, including the Red Cross of Trapani, has implemented initiatives which, through the provision of chairs and wheelchairs and other aids, have allowed the use of the beaches in a single point of the coast, also through the presence of operators and facilities”.

The beach will be equipped and made accessible from 1st July to 31st August, every day except holidays, from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 3pm to 6.30pm. The presence of health workers, nurses and Red Cross volunteers is expected. The users of the service will be both people with minor disabilities and people with more important needs, and in any case all with medical certification of suitability for bathing and access to the beach, with the aim of being able to offer the possibility of swimming in the sea also to those people who don’t always have the opportunity.

The Health Company, under the guidance of the general director Ferdinando Croce, will provide the presence of a Family and Community nurse from the Trapani Health District one day a week for the most complex subjects, previously agreed between the parties, from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 3pm to 5pm and again, the presence of an OSS every weekday from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 3pm to 6.30pm.

The Municipality of Trapani will provide gazebos, platforms and bathrooms, while the Red Cross will guarantee the volunteers, the job chairs, a vehicle with driver, the connection with other associations, the medical bag for the management of emergencies and small medications and the defibrillator.

Now the Municipality, ASP and Red Cross will sign the protocol to “offer a service that makes the territory suitable for an adequate tourist offer also for those who have needs of this type, with accessible beaches, without the constraint of an architectural barrier or of having to be accompanied by relatives and/or friends”.
