Emotion and participation last night in Teggiano, in the Prato Perillo area, for the inauguration of the new Cross, the work of a recovery action by the municipal administration, led by the mayor Michele di Candia, installed in the center of the square. The work was returned to the citizens on the occasion of the heartfelt celebrations in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
At the end of the procession, the inauguration ceremony of the new Cross took place, in the presence of the mayor Michele di Candia, the municipal administration and the regional councilor Corrado Matera. The inauguration was followed by a blessing by the parish priest of the Sacred Heart church, Don Michele Totaro. In 1950, after the spring preaching of the Passionist fathers of San Paolo della Croce, at the invitation of the then parish priest Msgr. Quagliariello, the Cross was installed in the Square, as testimony to that preaching. The work was then removed when, years later, the small square was affected by repaving works. The Cross represented a point of reference for the local community and citizens made a request for its restoration, which was accepted by the municipal administration.
“We accepted the citizens’ request – explained the mayor Michele di Candia – we carried out the work and installed it. This evening we retraced history, in the name of faith. We thank Msgr. Quagliariello for the work carried out at the time and all those who made the repositioning of this Cross here in Prato Perillo possible”. Among the interventions recorded during the inauguration were also those of the writer Cono Cimino who retraced the history of the Cross, of the professor Salvatore Gallo who recalled the community’s bond with the work and of the regional councilor Matera who placed the emphasis on the importance of the initiative.
