At the Municipality of Modica, WWF representatives to talk about the environment and sea turtles –

Safeguarding the environment and protecting turtles are central points for the municipal administration of Modica which met local WWF representatives at the Municipality a few days ago to study together the actions necessary to carry out these objectives.

The councilor for Ecology and Environmental Policies and for the Protection and Defense of Animals Samuele Cannizzaro is at the forefront on this front. “In recent days– declares Cannizzaro – together with the Mayor Maria Monisteri, we met the local representatives of the WWF in the Mayor’s room in Palazzo San Domenico. During the meeting, we gave our full availability to support the volunteers who monitor the Blue Flag beaches of our coast every morning, to intercept traces and therefore nesting of Caretta Caretta Turtles. At this moment, only the Maganuco beach has the presence of a nest but other ‘excursions’ are already monitored and therefore the discovery of other nests is expected at any moment. For this reason– continues the Environment Councilor – we have already made available the necessary equipment to create the corridors and therefore not disturb the natural hatching and entry into the water of the turtles. Constant monitoring and protection activities will also be implemented to protect these splendid animals. These are services requested by volunteers and to which we are fully available”

Also present at the meeting was the coordinator of our municipal Civil Protection Group Alessandro Cicciarella who will assist and lend a hand to the WWF volunteers during the season.

The discussion had with Piero Lancetta, Giovanni Colombo and Ernesto Pernice, the three volunteer operators of the WWF turtle project, follows another meeting that the administration had a few weeks ago with the representatives of the Melograno club of Legambiente Modica, with which a collaboration is always open regarding the protection of the environment and the protection of turtles.

These are issues that are very close to our hearts– concludes Samuele Cannizzaro – and on which our administration works day after day, convinced that a healthy environment and a protected ecosystem are essential elements to give better liveability to future generations

We remind you that Modica is among the “turtle-friendly” municipalities and this is why it is implementing a whole series of actions necessary to support the project including, as mentioned, eliminating the stone supports for the umbrellas from the beaches which could have caused serious damage to the turtles and had compromised recognition.
