POMPEII. The word “dream” in Pompeii is written with the letter D. Just like what happened today, when at 5.57pm the local football team achieved promotion to Serie D, the fourth national division, for the first time.
And he did it in the most convincing and deserved way possible, that is, beating Modica 4-0 in the second leg final of the national playoffs. A success that reaffirms even more clearly the success of seven days ago on the Modica pitch.
The return match at the “Bellucci” in Pompeii is without history. Modica has a one-goal deficit to recover but is unable to create danger in D’Agostino’s area, also thanks to the pressing asphyxiating from Scarlato’s eleven. Pompeii controls, tries to sink and when it can it hurts. At the end of the first half Simonetti converted a free kick from the edge of the area and gave the Pompeians the lead (1-0).
The match might still seem open but in the second half the Sicilians disappear from the field. Also due to Palermo’s expulsion in the 55th minute for a naivety in midfield which cost him his second yellow card.
Pompeii then had no choice but to spread and they did so with Matute (60′), Guarracino (66′) and Di Paola (72′). A deadly trio that closes the match and any promotional speech. The passing of the minutes only serves to count the time that separates Pompeii from the long-awaited goal of Serie D.
A goal deservedly achieved at the end of a season that was certainly not easy, but marked by the stubbornness of president Mango (by the way, it is always better to play the playoffs) and by the solidity that Scarlato was able to give to this group. But now it’s time to enjoy the party. There will be plenty of time to take stock of a complex, exhilarating and, above all, unforgettable season.
