ANCONA A rustling sound. Then another, and another. The breakdown. An enormous branch from one of the trees that surrounds Piazza Cavour suddenly broke off before the astonished gaze of those who were walking at the foot of the statue of Camillo Benso at that moment. Right under that tree is a bench. Unused, fortunately, at the time. The detached branch remained suspended, held by the branches below. In short, a series of circumstances for which, by pure chance, the failure did not have serious consequences. But, in fact, it was just a coincidence. The firefighters immediately intervened to secure the tree and remove the unsafe branch that remained in mid-air.
The danger
Here is the state of public greenery in the city. On a normal morning, without particular bad weather, wind or rain, a tree loses a large branch risking injuring passers-by. At this point a health check of all the trees in the square would be a must. Because yesterday morning may not be an isolated case. But the jungle alarm is now widespread throughout the capital. There are areas where the vegetation is truly out of control. The Citadel area is practically a forest. Along via Circonvallazione you can no longer distinguish the hedges from the trees.
The complaints
The branches extend towards the road. In some places they occupy stretches of roadway which is already quite narrow by its nature. A widespread problem everywhere. You just need to take a walk around the city to realize this. Residents’ complaints are well known. The Municipality is in difficulty, it plans works as much as it can. But economic resources are not enough. A targeted, political choice would be needed to divert funds specifically to waste cuttings. A massive operation, to prevent what happened yesterday morning in Piazza Cavour from happening not only in that place, but also in all the other parts where the public green areas have not seen proper maintenance for some time.
The branches on the balconies
In Pietralacroce, in via del Conero, right at the entrance to the neighborhood, the branches of the trees have even entered the balconies of the buildings. The bus shelter was practically swallowed up by the hedge which exploded in all its luxuriance and also invaded part of the road. In short, a situation that cannot continue any longer. Even along the north-south axis, there are points where uncultivated plants touch the roadway. And in addition to the danger they can cause, it is also the effect of sloppiness and degradation that it causes in those who pass by that must make the Municipality move immediately to remedy the situation. The maintenance of urban greenery must be one of the priorities. Otherwise, the credibility of this municipal administration could also end under the next branch that collapses.
