The municipal council of Matera, accepting the proposal of the city president of the “Soroptimist Club”, has decided to join the “Ethical charter for overcoming gender gaps and discrimination in sport”, with the aim of promoting equality gender and combat all forms of discrimination in the sporting environment. Achieving gender equality and the self-determination of women and girls is Goal 5 of the UN Agenda 2030. On this basis, the World Health Organization (WHO) has adopted the “Global Action Plan on physical activity for the years 2018-2030”, which states that investment in policies that promote sport and physical activity directly contributes to the achievement, among others, of the objectives of gender equality and quality education . Although female participation in sport is also gradually increasing in Matera, women remain underrepresented in the decision-making bodies of sports institutions at local and national, as well as European and global levels. The Charter also defined as the “Ethical Charter of women’s sport” developed by Assist and updated in 2023, was created for the protection of the rights of athletes and has among its objectives: raising awareness on issues concerning equal opportunities and rights in sport, the use of gender-inclusive language and the promotion of sports culture in general. Satisfaction with this important provision was expressed by the mayor, Domenico Bennardi, and by the municipal council. «The Municipality of Matera recognizes sport as a form of immaterial and universal culture – the administrators comment – a vehicle of values ​​and a tool for growth for the youngest and youngest, without distinctions of sex. At the same time, we set the promotion of gender equality among our priority objectives. Therefore, the municipal administration fully shares the aims of the initiative of the Soroptimist Club of Matera, regarding adherence to the ethical charter as proposed within the national project of the Soroptimist International of Italy. Therefore, the document constitutes a commitment by the Municipality to ensure gender equality in the sports field and to develop policies and actions to enhance the practice of sports also by girls and women”. On Sunday 30 June, starting at 7.30 pm at the Fabbrica del Carro trionfale in the Piccianello district, Mayor Bennardi will speak at the round table sponsored by the Municipality of Matera on: “Women and sport, integration, education and respect, psychophysical well-being. The value of sport”, at the end of which the signing of the Charter will be formalized.
