A very painful human story, but also a demonstration of absolute love and immense generosity. A middle-aged man from the province of Isernia died at Cardarelli in Campobasso. Unfortunately, nothing can be done for him, despite the care given to him in the garrison of the regional capital. In that moment of immense despair, i his family members were able to find the strength for a profoundly noble gesture, the authorization to remove organs, which “saved” the lives (certainly the quality of life) of four people. Four people who were waiting for a heart, a liver and a kidney.
Upon verification of the clinical conditions required by law, by the appropriate commission, the man’s brain death was declared. After the consent given by his family, therefore, the delicate procedure was started in synergy with the L’Aquila Transplant Center, to which Molise refers. Hours and hours of complicated work, also due to the very heavy “human” load that a case like this brings with it, for the Anesthesia department. The entire and complex operation – which also includes the organization of the transport of the organs to their respective destinations in good time and therefore with the support of police relays – was coordinated by the operating block of the capital’s hospital regional directed by Dr. Vincenzo Cuzzone. The heart, liver and kidney sampling was performed by external surgeons. Relations with the transplant center were constantly maintained by the intensive care nurse Giovanna D’Andrea.
Organ harvesting at Cardarelli in Campobasso had not been carried out for over ten years. Despite its drama, together with the great example of the family, in this story the traits of good healthcare also stand out, the demonstration of skills and competences – human and professional – which are not rare in Molise hospitals.
