Each city is the guardian of its own memory; a historical, artistic, cultural, political and social memory, stratified and firmly anchored on the stones of the past.

The Royal Archconfraternity of SS. John the Baptist and the Evangelist, later awarded in 1735 by Charles III with the title of “Knights of Malta ad Honorem”, is one of those solid stones of memory of the city of Catanzaro.

On the eve of the feast of St. John the Baptist in the Church of the same name at 6.00 pm, it will be the Royal Archconfraternity that will once again and inextricably strengthen its bond with the city, in a way that harks back to the past times in which the Priors members of the Archconfraternity were also members of the city government; Mayor Nicola Fiorita will receive the insignia of the Royal Archconfraternity.

A bond is once again formed between the purely political part and the spiritual and religious one perpetrated over the centuries by the Archconfraternity, which has always given aid to the most needy.

This is precisely the main mission of the members of the Archconfraternity; still provide home, food and pharmaceutical assistance to the most needy – only linked to essential medicines – even during the difficult pandemic period, demonstrating the exemplary service offered to the city.

The charitable spirit is financed and supported by the members, Knights and Dames, who annually pay a per capita fee: the achievement of results is also achieved thanks to the large number of donations from affiliates who live in other States, for a total of approximately one thousand members . Among these the Archconfraternity boasts the Spanish Royal House, the Cardinal of Montserrat and a conspicuous Spanish chapter.

Together with the Mayor, fourteen other new members will be awarded including Monsignors L. Cannizzo, M. Cozzoli, A. Morabito, P. Valdrini.

The ceremony, broadcast live by La Nuova Calabria with commentary by Marco Calabrese and Anna Trapasso, will be presided over by the Diocesan Vicar Monsignor Cognetti.
