Salvatore: Lots of Gs for a high-speed autumn

No names, but the reference to the position of the exponent of Matera is evident. Pasquale De Lorenzo moves on the absence of Matera among the initiatives of the G7, held in Borgo Egnazia (Brindisi) https://giornalemio.it/politica/ g7-a-egnazia-matera-doesn’t-move-and-is-a-missed-opportunity/. For the M5S municipal councilor, who recalls what has been done in the past thanks to the former minister Luigi Di Maio, and what is expected for the autumn, Matera is there. The crux, like all events conceived elsewhere, is that there is no continuity on the paths started. After the event, the photos of the occasion, things end there. It depends on central governments, but also on the ability of local governments to continue on the path of what they have hosted. If we had the will and ability to do it, tourism, which suffers from the lack of experience and professionalism to deal with it full-time, would also benefit.

THE NOTE FROM COUNCILOR SALVATORE

The short-sightedness shown by a certain, now largely marginal, political section of the city of Matera with respect to the leading role it plays in the occasions of maximum hospitality on a global level in recent years is somewhat strange. We would like to remember how immediately after the year of European Capital of Culture the attention of the then minister Luigi Di Maio brought to Matera the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the 20 great world powers. Meeting whose conclusion resulted in the unanimous approval of the so-called “Matera Charter” against food waste which will dictate the guidelines until 2050. The current national government looked to Matera for the occasion of the G7, assigning it the important task of bringing the Ministers of Equal Opportunities of the most important countries on the planet into dialogue in an environment full of history and culture. And just a few days later, the City of Stones will be the setting for the meeting of the Italian Institutes of Culture in the World desired by Deputy Prime Minister Tajani. Probably some could have been satisfied, as happened in the past, with mere tourist catwalks or marginal conferences with second-rate exponents. The Bennardi administration, through the cultural and development policies of the City of Matera, has continued to generate attention in the highest national institutions. Evidence of the excellent work that has been underway for three years now is the continuous requests for collaboration and twinning from many global entities that share with Matera the condition of being a World Heritage Site and a cultural reference point. We are certain that it was simply a moment of distraction probably linked to internal discomforts in political parties very far from the ideas of the 5 Star Movement and all those political forces that have the social development of the City at heart. What Matera is about to experience will be a “high speed” autumn, nothing more than a train for companions, during which it will relaunch the path of international visibility that makes it a true capital of the Mediterranean where representatives of the most industrialized and socially advanced countries will be able to build paths of welcome and peace in an extremely complex historical moment for the planet and for which Italy must carve out a leading role.

Francesco Salvatore
Councilor of the Matera 5 Star Movement
