The story of the blood bags that supposedly “disappeared” allRuggi hospital it would seem to make more noise than patients who wait up to seven hours in the emergency room for a visit. At the request of councilor Arturo Iannelli, president of the Culture commission of the Municipality of Salernomet yesterday Transparency commission, chaired by councilor Antonio Cammarota, just to discuss the matter. Special guest, the Dr. Massimo Frigino, medical director of the immunohematology service of the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona hospital. Frigino told the commission that he «is aware that there is a criminal case (the Salerno prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation file to shed light on the matter, ed.) but I have not yet been heard by the magistrates. The doctor explained to the Transparency commission, whose members elected Iannelli as rapporteur, the procedure used for the collection and conservation of blood. The bags, we read in the commission report, also signed by Doctor Massimo Frigino, «with all the data and the evaluation are recorded on a database: all the steps, up to the transfusion, take place electronically, also through code systems bars”.
THE STORY
Frigino, during the hearing, also detailed some details of the investigation Salerno prosecutor’s office, speaking – specifically – “of 39 pockets in question” probably referring to those of which traces have been lost because, in the minutes, it also states “in the time frame 2019-2023”. Then he talks about a complainant, implying that following the inspection by the Nas police there would probably be a complaint. Regarding the complainant, he specifies that “he only verified the final point and not the routes which I have in a file which however I cannot transmit because there is sensitive data”. Then he spoke of a bag “of 200 grams which was eliminated but the elimination is not certified” then “three seven which were of insufficient weight”, and again “of three others which were broken down to be given to newborns, usually the mother bag is kept for caution and reserve but if the newborn no longer needs the bag it is eliminated and these were not discharged. Then there are two other bags that were eliminated and were not written down, then another two bags purchased from another hospital and here the load was insufficient so they are not usable for the database”. The doctor also assured that “the data I report have been personally verified by me”. Continuing: “one bag was removed and not evaluated for production” and hence a list, bag by bag, of the 39 which, according to him, would be under the magnifying glass of the investigators. «The bags treated in five years – he then concluded – are 60 thousand and are mentioned in the reports in over 100 thousand steps».
THE COMMENT
«We asked for this card – commented President Cammarota – which he still cannot give us but Doctor Frigino explained all the routes of the 39 bags, except for two. I think his story is quite interesting: we were together for two hours.”
THE INVESTIGATION
The file, followed personally by chief prosecutor Giuseppe Borrelli, concerns blood bags not found starting from 2021 and up to 2023. And under the magnifying glass of Carabinieri of the Nas of Salerno, there would be two registers for noting the bags and also the system for uploading the data onto a computer platform. Irregularities which the magistrates now intend to look at clearly as it cannot be ruled out that these bags may have been used, despite the expiry date, or disposed of irregularly. All to the detriment of patients.
