The art of joy – Part 1 and Part 2 – Dramatic. Directed by Valeria Golino, with Tecla Insolia, Jasmine Trinca, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Guido Caprino. From the novel by Goliarda Sapienza. In the countryside around Catania, at the beginning of the twentieth century. Modesta, following the death of her father (who had abused her), is welcomed into a convent where she has the opportunity to further her education, under the protection of the Abbess. Upon her death, Modesta moves into the new and aristocratic family to which her educator has guided her, where she places herself at the complete service of the princess mother and where she insinuates herself in a manner of love, seduction and reckless pleasure among others family members. Bad boys: Ride or Die – Action. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bidall Fallah, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. A corruption case involving the Miami police, the two agents Lowrey and Burnett who must shed light on what happened, the discovery that their missing captain Howard is accused of having been in business with drug cartels. But someone now accuses them of having collaborated with him and consequently with some of the criminal organizations circulating in the city. And now it is the police and the traffickers who are on their trail, they will have to be the ones to place themselves outside the law in order to clarify everything, chases, escapes, explosions and all the action required in cases of this kind. The Goldman case – Dramatic. Directed by Cédric Kahn, with Arieh Worthalter and Arturo Harari. The true story of the second project to which Pierre Goldman, a militant of the French extreme left, was subjected in 1975. Accused of multiple crimes, Goldman admits all charges with the vehement exception of those for murder (during a robbery inside two people had been killed in a pharmacy), for which he not only proclaims his innocence but also lashes out polemically against everything and everyone in the courtroom, rejecting any moralistic characterization of his difficult life. Mischief at home – Comedy. Directed by Thea Sharrock, starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Timothy Spall. 1922. A town on the southern coast of England is the scene of a farcical and at times sinister scandal. Based on a bizarre true story, the film follows the adventures of two neighbors: Edith, a local native and deeply conservative, and Rose, a turbulent Irish immigrant. When Edith and other of her fellow citizens begin to receive obscene letters full of smut, suspicion immediately falls on Rose. The anonymous letters sparked a nationwide protest that resulted in a trial. The women – led by the policewoman Gladys – will investigate the crime, suspecting that things may not be as they seem. Once upon a time in Bhutan – Dramatic comedy. Directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji. An American travels to Bhutan in search of a precious antique rifle and crosses paths with a young monk wandering the serene mountains, instructed by his master to put things right. Duration 107 minutes. (National)
Challengers – Dramatic. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, with Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. The film that should have inaugurated the last Venice Film Festival. With the screenplay by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes – who will also be the screenwriter of Guadagnino’s next film, “Queer”, based on the novel by William Borroughs, starring Daniel Craig -, it is the story of Tashi, a former tennis prodigy, who, having retired from competitions, takes to train her husband Art, who will find himself competing in a competition with his wife’s ex-flame, Patrick, as well as his old and best friend. When the game becomes a metaphor for power and life, when through the rhythm of the competitions and the mirror that is created between past and present, the representation of a threesome relationship occurs. From the top of a cold tower – Dramatic. Directed by Francesco Frangipane, with Edoardo Pesce, Vanessa Scalera, Anna Bonaiuto and Giorgio Colangeli. Father, mother, brother and sister, a united nucleus, a life together. Michela and Giovanni, the parents, suffer from a genetic disease, a disease that affects the medullary tissues, a disease that has affected both of them. Elena and Antonio, the children, would like to donate their marrow to save them both, but this is not possible, only Elena is compatible and only one of the parents can be saved. Eillen – Dramatic. Directed by William Oldroyd, with Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway. In 1960s Boston, Eillen works as a secretary in a juvenile reform school while she cares for her alcoholic father. When Rebecca, the new psychologist, arrives, things seem to change. The woman exerts a great fascination on Eillen, a great friendship develops between the two: which, however, takes on strange contours when Rebecca makes Eillen aware of one of her secrets. El Paraíso – Dramatic. Directed by Enrico Maria Artale, with Edoardo Pesce and Margarita Rosa De Francisco. Julio Cesar, almost forty years old, lives with his mother in a house at the mouth of the Tiber. They both work with a drug dealer and love going dancing together in clubs that play Latin American music. The tensions that are already felt between them explode when Ines arrives from Colombia, very young, hired as a drug courier. Her mother begins to act extremely jealous. Duration 106 minutes. The taste of things – Dramatic. Directed by Tran Anh Hung, with Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel. 1885. The impeccable cook Eugénie has been working for the famous gastronome Dodin for over twenty years. Their partnership gives life to dishes, one more delicious than the other, which amaze even the most illustrious chefs in the world. As time passed, the practice of food culture and mutual admiration developed into a romantic relationship. However, Eugénie is fond of her freedom and she never wanted to marry Dodin. So he decides to do something he’s never done before: he’ll cook for her. Duration 136 minutes. (Roman room 1)
The empire – Fantasy. Directed by Bruno Dumont, with Fabrice Luchini. A village in the north of France, on the coast, an everyday life in which a war of extraterrestrial forces is about to explode. The cause is little Freddy, born from the union between a human and a being from other worlds. Childhood problems for Riley, restless sleep and her parents having difficulty putting up with it, her best friends who in the next few months will go to attend a different high school than hers, the new summer camp which only lasts three days but in which it is necessary to be accepted so as not to find alone. Kinds of Kindness – Dramatic. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Defoe and Margaret Qualley. Three episodes, linked together by the cast (with different characters) and different situations. In the first episode, an employee is instructed by his boss to kill a man: he fails in the attempt and is forced to adopt increasingly absurd stratagems to repair the damage. In the second, a policeman is convinced that his wife, who disappeared for months and then returned after a (claimed) trip, has been replaced by a lookalike. In the third, two followers of a sect are looking for a woman who has the power to bring life back to the dead. Presented in competition at Cannes, Palmarès as best leading actor to Jesse Plemons. The Animal Kingdom – Fantasy. Directed by Thomas Cailley, with Romain Douris, Paul Kircher and Adèle Exarchopoulos. François has just accompanied his sixteen-year-old son Emile to a medical visit and on his way back he gets stuck in traffic. Suddenly, a van near him derails, leaving time for the man who inside her with other people is also his wife: she has started to change, to transform into an animal. Helped by a policewoman, François and Emile set out to look for the woman: but in the meantime the first signs of the mutation begin to appear in her girlfriend too. Duration 128 minutes. Kathy, a steadfast member of the Vandals, married to a wild and reckless biker named Benny, chronicles the evolution of the Vandals over the course of a decade, starting as a local club of outsiders united by good times, roaring bikes and respect for their strong and omnipresent leader Johnny. Over the years, Kathy tries her best to handle her husband’s indomitable nature and her loyalty to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. As life in the Vandals becomes more dangerous and the club threatens to become a dangerous gang, Kathy Benny and Johnny are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club and each other. The braid – Dramatic. Directed by Laetitia Colombani, with Kim Raver, Fotinì Peluso and Mia Maelzer. Three portraits of women by the French director. In northern India, Smita lives with her husband and daughter, the miserable job of cleaning the bathrooms of the Brahmins: when the girl at school is beaten by the teacher who expects her to clean the classroom floor, Smita will flee with her daughter towards the south, abandoning everything and everyone. In the south of Italy, in Puglia, Giulia helps her father in his work: but when he has an accident, she will be made aware of the many debts he has incurred and she will fall in love with a Sikh worker. In Canada, Sarah is an accomplished lawyer, with two divorces behind her and three children from two different fathers: an illness will suddenly appear and there will be many questions about her future.
