VENICE – Stuck in the carriages of a broken down train, stopped under the scorching sun, in the throes of the infernal heat. This is how the day experienced today by the train passengers can be summed up Red Arrow 9422 by Trenitalia, which left Rome Termini at 1.35pm and headed to Venice Mestre. The convoy stopped due to a breakdown a few minutes after departure, near Settebagni, on the outskirts of the capital. There is zero chance of restarting.
Elderly people, children and a pregnant woman remained like this for more than two hours, prisoners of hot carriages, without air conditioning, without water, and with very little oxygen. The perceived temperature on board, according to some testimonies collected by Repubblica, was 50 degrees. The former Minister of Culture was also on the train, Dario Franceschiniwho described the trip as a “bad experience”.
The ordeal
During those two interminable hours, spent without the possibility of rolling down the windows, many passengers remained without water to drink. Just as many flocked into the restaurant car, where bottles of water were distributed free of charge by Trenitalia staff. Once supplies ran out, however, a good number of people were left without. The ordeal ended at 4.28pm, when a second train appeared on the horizon to transfer the unfortunate passengers.
