BRINDISI – Tuesday 25 June at 6pm, at the “Ribezzo” Museum in Brindisi – Piazza Duomo, presentation of the conservative restoration work on the valuable Epigraph of the Traveller, a thousand-year-old icon and warning for the foreigner to stop in Brundisium.
The restoration, an intervention of Cultural Patronage, the result of concertation and awareness of the Arch. Emilia Mannozzi – director of the Polo BiblioMuseale of Brindisi, was financed by the associations Club Inner Wheel of Brindisi “Cristina Cordella”, Rotary Club of Brindisi “Valesio”, Rotary Club “Brindisi”, Secom Srl, Energie Alternative Srl.
The typology of each intervention, carried out by the restorers Annalisa Costanzo and Daniela Pirro, was previously scientifically evaluated, in agreement and with the supervision of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Brindisi and Lecce.
The Epigraph, among the most significant in the Ribezzo Museum due to the notable literary level of the text, is dated between the end of the 1st century. AD and the beginning of the 2nd AD. The two marble fragments, perfectly matching, were found at different times in 1869 and 1871, during the dredging works of the internal port.
“Si non molestum est, hospes, consiste et lege. Navibus velivolis magnum mare saepe cucurri, accessi terras complures. Terminus hicc est quem mihi nascenti quondam Parcae cecinere… ”The traveller, unknown to us, invites us to stop and read (consiste et lege) to tell us about his adventures at sea and the numerous lands he reached. His journey will end hicc in Brindisi, a place chosen for him by the Fates, with a wish to us who read and stop to live and feel good.
