Sounds of Murgia 2024 at the starting line. It begins on Saturday 22 June with two shows: Chiara Casarico’s homage to the Sicilian storyteller Rosa Balistrieri. Following is the musical journey of the Corradi-Colombo-Tombesi trio with “Passeggeri”. Appointment at Masseria Malerba (Altamura) from 8.30pm

After the sensational preview in Borgo Sovereto by Terlizzi, last June 6th, with Omar Sosa and Gustavo Ovalles, it officially starts Saturday 22 June the program of XXIII edition of the international music festival Suoni della Murgiawith the artistic direction of Luigi Bologneseamong the longest running events in Puglia, with a double appointment in Masseria Malerba in Altamura (Bari). Opens at 8.30pm Chiara Casarico (song and story), accompanied by Desiree Infascelli (accordion). The concert show, entitled, ‘Rosa sings and cunta’, is dedicated to the famous Sicilian storyteller Rosa Balistrieri. Through her songs and the acting of Casarico who is an actress-singer, director, author, the story and emotions of a woman who freed herself from poverty and violence through singing are retraced, bringing into her art and into her skin the desperation of the outcasts and the redemption of the last.

Followed by the trio’s concert at 9.30pm Corrado Corradi (bandonina, accordina, song, drum), Rachele Colombo (singing, guitar, percussion, looper), Roberto Tombesi (organetto, mandola, singing, tambourine). The show, entitled “Passengers”, it is the musical notebook it is the musical notebook of an extraordinary journey, which is inspired by the one that the great Italian actress Adelaide Ristori undertook in 1874, on a ship sailing across the seas of the world, the grandest ever undertaken at the time by a company theatrical. The tour lasted over 20 months. It was told by Marco Piazza, the first young actor, Corradi’s great-grandfather, in the precious letters to his parents collected and published in 1948, which represent the faithful historical memory of triumphs of proportions never achieved again but also the direct testimony of an epic, unique adventure : the encounter with different cultures, the difficult landings, the dangers of a mother and stepmother nature, the humanity of the passengers. The musical “journey” of the three artists is an adventure full of sounds, rhythms and melodies, the result of which brings together tradition and new compositions, custom and originality, past and present, integrating the music of the territory in which they live, the Veneto, with similar ones in other countries. Tombesi, architect, ethnomusicologist, teacher, multi-instrumentalist and singer, founded the historic ensemble in 1981 with his brother Giancarlo Calicanto, contributing internationally to spread and revitalize traditional and Venetian-inspired music. Corradi (musician, arranger and composer) and Colombo (singer, multi-instrumentalist and eclectic composer) were also members of Calicanto in the past. Together they founded the Venetian music group “Archedora” in 2000.

There are 24 events in total in the event, scheduled from June to the end of August, for an even greater total number of concerts, which will be held in historic homes, courtyards, farms, rural villages, naturalistic oases, spread across the territory between Altamura, Minervino Murge and Terlizzi.

The Suoni della Murgia review 2024 edition

The Suoni della Murgia Festival, among the longest-running in Puglia, born and characterized for many years under the sign of popular music and world music (it is not for nothing that it is among the founding events of the Italian World Music Network), even with this year’s program it continues in its choice, now successfully tested in recent editions, of going beyond the borders of a single city (in the specific case Altamura), opening up to other centres, and of setting the shows in historic homes, courtyards, farms, rural villages, naturalistic oases, spread throughout the area, also to allow spectators to refresh themselves at the end of days of summer heat and city chaos. Furthermore, with the aim of enhancing natural environments and surprising and often little-known architectural beauties. A common thread, rather than a theme, that the organizers have followed for the program of the 23rd edition is that of “trespassing”. As has been the case since the first editions, artists from different parts of Italy and the world arrive at Suoni della Murgia who have chosen to break away from their usual musical canons and registers, to compare themselves with other artists and to experiment with different genres and styles. An international projection that has illuminated the event since the first editions and which will characterize the event again this year with artists of great musical level. Among others Redi Hasa; Davide Casali-The New Original Klezmer Ensemble Trio; Vincenzo Cipriani & Israel Varela; Marco Ambrosini and the group de “The tasting” (Anna-Liisa Eller, Angela Ambrosini, Valentin Cointot, Eva-Maria Rusche), with a reworking of the repertoire of Johan Sebastian Bach.

And then, new this year, Suoni della Murgia will host “Plucking of the string”, the 1st music festival of the historical figure of the guitarist-composer, scheduled between 19 and 21 July in Altamura, conceived and directed by the maestro Vito Nicola Paradiso. In addition to masterclasses and conferences, every year a series of concerts dedicated to the world of the guitar, its evolution over time and the contemporary expressions that enrich it and connect it with the magnificent and exciting world of plucked strings will be offered. They will perform at the festival Maurizio Colonna; Vito Nicola Paradiso and Balen Lopez de Munain; Claudio Farinone; Julia Malischnig (guitar vocal), Elías Morales Pérez, (flamenco dance) in the show “Flamencotanz-Passion and dance”; Nico Berardi and Miguel Zepe Diaz in the show “From South to South”.

The artistic director Luigi Bolognese highlights the main theme of the XXIII edition: ‘Sconfinements’. “It means meeting and comparison between genres and styles of different origins, with the result of creating an expansion of the sound dimension,” he explains. “No longer a genre exhibition, therefore, but open to genres which allows enrichment and growth for the artists themselves, coming from all over the world. The latter, punctually, thank us every year for the experiences they had in the Murgia. It is no coincidence that Suoni della Murgia is one of the events that founded the Italian World Music Network”.

The Suoni della Murgia review is supported by Municipalities of Altamura, Minervino Murge and Terlizzi and from Puglia region and is sponsored by the Alta Murgia National Park. Media partners is the television broadcaster TRM Network.
