In Agrigento the carabinieri have started investigations into the vast fire, probably of malicious origin, which has charred hectares and hectares of land cultivated with olive groves and almond groves, Mediterranean scrub and a portion of a wooded area, in the hilly area behind Monserrato and in the “San Luca” and “Piano Gatta” districts in front of the Montaperto district. The damage is extensive. Olive and almond trees were inside agricultural land owned by Agrigento residents. The flames also touched several country houses and farmhouses. The large fire broke out during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday and it took almost two days to finally put it out. The firefighters of the Provincial Command of Agrigento, the staff of the Forestry Corps and, yesterday morning, also two Canadairs and a helicopter operated from above for hours and hours. It took the rescuers, in fact, two days of work to fight, limit the front of the fire which extended for hectares, which widened depending on the wind with sudden changes in direction, and finally complete the extinguishing work. Regarding the origin of the event, the flames would have taken hold due to the criminal hand of one or more arsonists.
