energy efficiency for over 70 buildings in Pisa

Energy efficiency to reduce consumption and support the Municipality of Pisa in the energy transition process. This is what is foreseen in the agreement between the municipal administration of the Tuscan capital and ENGIE, a reference operator in the energy sector, one of the main players in Italy for decarbonisation.

The project is part of the broader sustainability path that the Municipality of Pisa has decided to undertake with ENGIE for a more rational use of energy and a reduction in waste.

The partnership has a total duration of 6 years and involves an investment made by the company of approximately 900,000 euros for targeted energy efficiency interventions on systems with higher levels of heat dispersion.

Regulatory adaptation interventions and maintenance works will be carried out energy optimization of the heating systems of 22 buildings, among these 12 educational institutions, from nurseries to secondary schools and buildings of particular artistic-cultural value, such as the Palazzo Pretorio, the Palazzo Gambacorti and the San Michele degli Scalzi cultural centre. All heat generators will be replaced with latest generation systems and a system of remote control will allow you to remotely monitor the operation of the systems and consumption performance.

Better energy performance and greater environmental efficiency

In addition to ensuring better energy performance, the partnership will guarantee greater environmental efficiency, avoiding the release into the atmosphere of a total of 540 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the planting of 3,250 new trees in the city.

Raffaele Latrofa, deputy mayor of the Municipality of Pisa
Regarding the contract with ENGIE, I would like to say that it is a step forward on the topic of energy transition, in line with the objectives set out in the mandate program. For the next six years, ENGIE will be entrusted with all the utilities relating to the heat management of 72 public buildings, schools and historic buildings. The contract provides not only the management of consumption but also a share of investments, equal to 900 thousand euros, for new systems, with savings and lower costs in ordinary and extraordinary maintenance. The environmental aspect is of primary importance with a huge reduction in carbon, equal to 540 tons of CO2 equivalent to the planting of 3,250 new trees in the city.

Marco Massaria, Northern Area Director of ENGIE Italia
The partnership with the Municipality of Pisa is part of our Group’s strategy to accompany the country’s energy transition. Buildings are a cornerstone of energy policies at European, national and local level, as they are responsible for approximately 45% of final energy consumption and 17.5% of our country’s direct CO2 emissions. If we want to achieve the European decarbonisation and PNIEC objectives, it is essential to act on the country’s real estate assets, especially public ones. And our project for the city of Pisa goes in this direction.

I am 350 municipalities in Italy with which ENGIE has active energy efficiency projects, of which 28 in Tuscany, including Florence, Livorno, Massa Marittima and Isola del Giglio.
