disaster announced. Fires in the city, over 100 interventions in a few hours

A large fire broke out shortly after 1pm in the area Magliana, in southern Rome. The flames apparently started from some uncultivated fields in the area of Via Asciano, then the fire involved some nearby structures, several carcasses of abandoned cars and tyres: the area is known for the presence of landfills. So much so that the president of the 9th Municipality, Gianluca Lanzi, speaks of an “announced disaster and urgent Arpa control units”. In fact, you can’t breathe in the area anymore, several people on the street are wearing masks. High e the cloud of smoke is black that rose in the area, visible for several kilometers: not the first fire which occurs just as temperatures in the capital are reaching 40 degrees. A day of fire since they have already been there since the night 116 interventions due to fires, large or small, between Rome and the province. In Magliana, in detail, the firefighters have been working for several hours to control the flames (the first alarms went off shortly after 1.30 pm): the situation is so critical that even a helicopter is in action.

Too much smoke, the viaduct to Fiumicino closed

Officers attended the sceneXI Marconi Group and the IX Eur Group who had to ban the circulation of vehicles on the Magliana Viaduct, currently closed from via Cristoforo Colombo to via Isacco Newton in both directions. In fact, the thick smoke made traffic on the viaduct too dangerous. They are working to tame the flames several squares of firefighters and civil protection. FdI councilor Marco Palma of the 9th Municipality also reported the fire and on social media also recalled how numerous landfills and illegal settlements were found in the area of the fire.

The mini-mayor’s complaint: area never reclaimed

“A disaster announced. I cannot define otherwise what happened today in via Asciano, where a large fire broke out. – he wrote on social media Gianluca Lanzipresident of the IX municipality in his complaint- As in the summer of 2022, the area on the embankment of Tiberwithin the jurisdiction of Lazio region, was completely engulfed in flames fueled by the vegetation and by all the materials and waste deposited there by the illegal camps. For now the Magliana viaduct is closed to traffic in both directions. The Civil Protection of Rome Capital has requested ad Harp Lazio to position control units for air sampling. Although it does not fall within the competences of the Municipality or of Roma Capitale, precisely because I am convinced that my role is also that of trying to address the problems present in the territory of the Municipality attention of the Prefect of Rome and the police. I asked the Lazio Region, which is responsible and competent for the embankment of the Tiber and on the floodplain areas, to intervene. There isn’t much to invent to solve this problem once and for all. It would be enough to replicate what was done for the Tevere Magliana Park and the Tevere Marconi Park: the Lazio region it reclaimed and redeveloped the areas and once the paths and furnishings had been created, it entrusted the management of the parks to the Municipality. It is a winning model that the Lazio Region knows well, because – as mentioned – it has promoted and implemented it in the two river parks, and which I have proposed to also use in the area of Via Asciano. If we don’t intervene in this way, these are the results or rather the non-results.”
