Fight against turtle scale insects, census of pine trees in the Pisa outbreak

These days, a company commissioned by the Phytosanitary Service of the Tuscany Region (SFR) is carrying out the survey of the pines found in the areas infested by the turtle scale insect.

This activity is preparatory to the implementation of endotherapy interventions on the pines to eradicate the scale insects present and was communicated to the citizens through the publication on the noticeboard of the Municipality of Pisa, of the prescription of Official phytosanitary measures 164/2024 which asks the residents in the infected area to collaborate with disinfestation activities by allowing SFR staff or experts appointed by it to access their gardens.

Once the census has been completed, some specialized companies will carry out the endotherapeutic treatments with the coordination of the SFR staff, subsequently the plants that cannot be treated will be removed.

Operations for private individuals are completely free.

The areas affected by the census are the “infested areas” defined by Executive Decree 8140 of 16 April 2024, and can be consulted in the cartographic section of the SFR website.

The Phytosanitary Inspectors of the Tuscany Region, with the support of the staff of the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of the Agricultural Economy (CREA) of Florence and the Forestry Carabinieri, are carrying out a new campaign of investigations to monitor the spread of the cochineal insect .

In order to speed up activities and avoid incurring sanctions, the Phytosanitary Service asks all citizens residing in the area for maximum collaboration.
