LOMBARDY – “In Lombardy the SISS has been in total crash since Monday. The regional socio-health information system, on which all dematerialized drug prescriptions and diagnostic tests depend, as well as the compilation of illness certificates and the consultation of the electronic health record, has no longer worked since the beginning of the week. Especially in the morning hours, but sometimes even in the early afternoon hours, none of the functions are available, you can’t do absolutely anything. Lombardy is blocked“. The complaint Roberto Carlo Rossiregional president of the Snami family doctors union.
“It’s unworthy, a shame“, he attacks. “The SISS is the heart of the Lombardy healthcare system – points out – without which it is not possible to work correctly. We are now used to these crashes which, however, are normally partial, that is, one thing doesn’t work and another does, or perhaps the system works in fits and starts and jumps for a while, then starts again, then stops again. Unfortunately it’s an ongoing thing. But such a large blockade, which affects many territories, practically the entire region, and which makes the SISS totally unusable – Rossi specifies – it had perhaps been years since it had happened for so many days“.
The system, the union leader points out, “it does not work in the offices of general practitioners, but it does not work in all the terminals of accredited public and private hospitals either“. In other words, “all the terminals of the regional healthcare system are involved and therefore Lombardy’s healthcare is effectively blocked, a slowdown that is absolutely inconceivable in 2024“.
“Once again we denounce that the SISS system is largely inadequate, totally obsolete and unusable“, continues Rossi. “It’s a system that has very big holes. For decades – recalls the president of the regional Snami – all the operators say that it’s wrong, that it doesn’t work, yet absolutely nothing is done to improve it. We have said it in the Region many times, we have reiterated it in many documents, but there is nothing that can be done”. If “before the regional officials stubbornly denied” problems at the SISS, “now obviously they are forced to admit them”, however “nothing changes”.
This situation “it is completely inconceivable in 2024 – insists the white coat, who also presides over the Milan Medical Association – when there are systems that work with artificial intelligence, systems capable of performing many other functions than those of the SISS. The time has come to finish it”, urges Rossi. “Couragefully take on those who manage this system, remove them and set up an efficient system and network with well-targeted investments. Get some capable people to do what any computer science student would be able to do in a modern and future-oriented world.”
“It’s really time to say enough – concludes the Snami Lombardia summit – All the primary care doctors can’t stand it anymore and even the doctors in the hospital facilities are constantly complaining, because they too are now forced to work with this system and they too protest and can’t take it anymore. It is unworthy that a cutting-edge region projected towards the future, which prides itself on having a modern and top-level healthcare system, has an IT system and a network of this kind. It’s truly a shame.”
