Messina: The Carabinieri Barracks Messina Archbishopric named after Francesco Bonanno

The Carabinieri barracks of the Messina Arcivescovado station now bears the name of the Ordinary Marshal Francesco Bonanno, decorated with the Silver Medal for Military Valor “Alla Memoria”. With a solemn ceremony in the central Piazza Cairoli, the naming ceremony of the barracks took place, organized by the Carabinieri Provincial Command of Messina in agreement with the Municipal Administration. Present was the Interregional Carabinieri Commander “Culqualber”, Army Corps General Giovanni Truglio, accompanied by the Division General Giuseppe Spina, Commander of the Sicily Carabinieri Legion, the Prefect of Messina, Cosima Di Stani and the Metropolitan Mayor, Federico Basile, and of the other authorities, civil, military and religious of the province.
Present at the important event were his daughter, as godmother of the ceremony, and the wife of Marshal Francesco Bonanno, after whom the Barracks was named. He enlisted in the Army in 1953 and fell into service on 17 July 1974, at the age of 40, when he held the position of Commander of the Santo Stefano Medio Station. The soldier died during a firefight with a criminal in the Messina hamlet of Mili San Pietro.
The one named today after Marshal Bonanno is a legality safeguard strongly desired by the Carabinieri to be even closer to the people. A structure that represents a bastion of the law in an area that has received attention several times during the discussions convened in the prefecture on the phenomenon of baby gangs. During the technical committees, the importance of the physical presence of the police was underlined, as only with their uniform are they a deterrent for those who do not respect the rules.
