The magic of cinema under the stars. Perugia, news at the Frontone Arena

The long hot summer of cinema under the stars starts again with great confirmations and new features that promise sparks. This evening, the historic Arena dei Giardini del Frontone, which has always been one of the most loved and awaited moments in the city, will rekindle its projectors, kicking off the programming with a new organizational reality: the CineGatti of the brothers Marco and Mirco Gatti, together with the Zenith by Riccardo Bizzarri, was awarded the Municipality’s tender for the summer management of the Frontone for the next 36 months. Tomorrow it will be the turn of “Méliès en plein air”, the Arena of the Méliès cinema in the cloister of San Fiorenzo in via della Viola.

The new management. Two historic exhibitors from the Perugian acropolis, Gatti and Bizzarri, officially join forces (while PostModernissimo will open an Arena at Barton Park) with paperwork to be completed to create a temporary business company, “Fronte del cinema”. “The idea has been in the air for some time – Bizzarri said yesterday together with Mirco Gatti – and it aims to have other implications with the hypothesis of creating a collaboration between city cinemas for winter programming, there has already been an experiment “. The objective is to create a “mutual aid” model among neighborhood cinemas and allow everyone to remain open thanks to coordinated programming between exhibitors.

The Frontone Arena. The open-air cinema in the historic gardens of Borgo XX Giugno reopens this evening with the Italy-Spain football match at the European Championships, with free entry. From tomorrow there will be space for great cinema, always at 9pm with the most loved films of the season, successful films, children’s cartoons, new releases and previews. There are titles chosen by the public on social media under the supervision of Margherita Manenti, Italy’s challenges at the European Championships will be taken into account and Zenith will support the Arena in case of bad weather with an indoor space. “The programming – say the managers – traces the experience of past years. We have many ideas but there hasn’t yet been time to realize them”. The goal, they say, “is to use the space not only as a cinema arena but for wide-ranging cultural activities, live performances and catering”. Meanwhile, the collaborations are back: the Bar Frontone is managed by T-Trane who will take care of evenings of DJ sets (the premiere is tomorrow, guests include the Festival “L’Umbria che che split“, Metanoia with live remusications (on Sunday “Il Phantom of the Opera”), the opera in August. With “Cinema Revolution”, the ticket for European films costs 3.50 euros, for others 6 euros, 5 for children.

Méliès en plein air. And from tomorrow the Arena of the Méliès cinema will also open in via della Viola where CineGatti is offering the “D’Essai D’Estate” series. Tomorrow we start with the documentary “A sud della musica” in homage to Giovanna Marini and continue until August 31st with the films of the season and selected films presented directly by the associations, such as Legambiente, Fiorivano le Viole, Omphalos. There will also be five mini-reviews: “Manga for Dreams”, 5 Japanese anime cinema films, “Bodies on Loan”, with five titles by Pedro Almodovar, “Les enfant de Méliès”, 5 films for the little ones, “Culture Cult” with the masterpieces that made history and “I like Chaplin”, with 5 films by Charlot. finally, the “Films of the Year”, with the best titles from the Cannes to Venice festivals, often presented by the “Falene” collective which wants to educate the young generations to the magic of the big screen.
