18 people have been sent to trial by the Agrigento magistrate for water pollution around Lampedusa – BlogSicilia

The former mayors of Lampedusa, Giusi Nicolini and Salvatore Martello, the regional managers Marco Lupo, Maurizio Pirillo, Marcello Loria, Felice Ajello and Salvatore Cocina will be tried for the environmental pollution of the sea around the island. Pollution due to continuous sewage discharges without any treatment which for years have made the water in some areas “even 20 meters from the coast extremely cloudy and giving off a strong sewage smell”.






This was decided by the magistrate of the Agrigento court, Giuseppe Zampino, who sent 18 suspects to trial. Among the crimes hypothesized, for various reasons, are abuse of office, omission of official acts, environmental pollution and damage. The main complaint is that of having allowed, starting from 2015, the discharge of sewers into the sea.




The managers of the Nurovi company, the company awarded and executing the contract for the expansion of the purification plant, namely Sonja Nunziatina Cannizzo, Mattia Mondello and Emanuele Mondello, the technical director of the works Luigi, are going on trial along with former mayors and regional managers. Fidone, the sole person responsible for the Salvatore Stagno procedure.
