Mayor Cannito’s majority does not find the numbers in the chamber and for the umpteenth time finds itself forced to postpone the approval of the measures under discussion, some of which are of a certain importance, such as the replacement of the balustrades on the western coast road. Yesterday’s city council approved only one item on the agenda, the recomposition of the council commissions, then the majority decision announced on the microphone by councilor Gennaro Cefola after a brief suspension of work.
The explanation is not given but it is easy to read: due to the absence of the councilors Basile, Trimigno, Antonucci and Di Leo, the majority does not have the numbers to independently approve any measure and so Cannito, 11 councilors of his coalition and even all the councilors (with the exception of Campese) decide to leave the room. The quorum, however, is maintained by the presence of the centre-left opposition, part of Forza Italia and councilor Patrizia Mele, of the Mixed Group, for the first time in open dissent with the mayor and his majority. The discussion on the items on the agenda continues but in the absence of Cannito and his coalition the quorum to decide cannot be reached. For the centre-left, the conditions for carrying forward the council have no longer existed for some time.
Cannito is working to shore up his majority: yesterday the current Barsa board of directors came into the mayor’s sights, whose positions could be called into question to recompose the balance within the coalition. Cannito’s attack on the leadership of Barsa therefore did not go unnoticed, in response to a topical question from the opposition regarding the shortcomings shown by the Municipal Corporation in the maintenance activities of public areas.
Time is not on Cannito’s side. On the horizon is another challenging test for the mayor’s majority: the Tari increase is about to be discussed in the city council and the numbers in the chamber, faced with an unpopular measure, could waver again.
