At the end of tonight’s session of the Chamber, which gave the green light to differentiated autonomytwo types of different flags faced each other in the Chamber in Rome: those symbolic of Italy, waved from the opposition benches, and those of different Regions (from Veneto to Calabria passing through Lombardy) and the Serenissima removed from the benches of the League. We’ve been talking about it since 2019 and this step is just the latest in a series of twists.

The opposition sang the Mameli anthem, while someone shouted “shame” and “unity” to the majority. The League group, together with minister Roberto Calderoli, after the green light, posed with all their regional flags for a souvenir photo in the courtyard of Montecitorio, a shot then relaunched on social media by leader Matteo Salvini with the slogan “a historic day” .

«Saying this makes my legs tremble with emotion… the Chamber has given the definitive green light to differentiated autonomy! Today’s approval is the culmination of years and years of political battles in the League, within the institutions and in the squares together with the militants, with a vote that writes a page of history for the whole country.” This is the incipit of the message that the Minister of Autonomy, Roberto Calderoliposted on Facebook immediately after the approval of the Autonomy reform.
And to the criticisms of the opposition he replies: «Whoever says that this measure will split Italy is wrong, because it will do the exact opposite. The goal is to allow all Regions to run faster and faster, reducing territorial gaps and creating that unity that only exists on paper. From this moment on there is a traced and well-defined process, which will allow the Regions to enhance their excellence and guarantee increasingly better services to citizens, in the name of responsibility and transparency”, concludes Calderoli.
Autonomy, Fontana reveals the cards for Lombardy
